How are our wonderful readers doing? Cape Town and Clovelly are outstandingly beautiful at the moment and it is pretty hard not to be happy when you’re here! Our seasons seem to have merged into one for a short period, with summer’s sunshine, spring’s gorgeous flowers and winter’s greenery prolonged by unexpected rainfall. The treefrogs are croaking, the birds are singing and it feels like there is no better place to be.

We would like to wish our new members a warm welcome to the Clovelly Family! Usually, we list our new members by name, however, we have had over 100 join us since we re-opened! How amazing is that? It is such a pleasure to welcome you.

We encourage you to take up MichellGolf on their offer of a free lesson and remember that our Club Captain, Greg Daly, and one of our golf professionals have a timeslot booked every non-medal Saturday, just after 13:00, where two members are welcome to join them. The losers have to purchase the winners a drink after golf and games can be arranged with our Golf Manager, Hanko Bothma, on or in person. Greg would love the opportunity to get to know you and to share a little about this great club.

Our Annual Fertilizer Application

Some of you may know that every October, we apply our annual fertilizer application to the course; greens, fairways, tees and rough included. Just a couple of weeks ago, our ground temperature measured 11 degrees – too cold for Kikuyu to grow and therefore, pointless to fertilize. The temperature needs to read at least 15 degrees.

After this past week’s sunny weather, we will be fertilizing our greens this coming Tuesday. We received a whopping total of 8835kgs of fertilizer which will be applied next week, and then again in February. Our Greenkeeper-in-training, Brian Dlutu, excitedly assured us that by Monday, 19th October we will be able to see a real difference!

Welcome to the family, Craig

In our last newsletter, we mentioned that we have a new caterer and that we would be introducing him to our readers soon. Without further ado, please give a warm welcome to our Chef and Food Consultant, Craig Wobbe.

Many of you may think Chef Craig looks familiar and you would be right. He happens to be the twin brother of our Club Champion, Gareth Wobbe. Craig discovered his passion for food when apprenticing at the very popular Olympia Cafe in Kalk Bay from 2000. Here he learned to focus on fresh, top-quality ingredients and homemade dishes. He went on to open SureFire Catering which covered everything from weddings to film shoots, corporate functions, and private parties. It wasn’t long before he was asked to be a personal chef after which he started his own bistro in town, Lola’s. After ten years and many good memories, Craig said goodbye to Lola’s and is excited to start this new chapter at Clovelly!

Craig will be involved in all things food at the club, from implementing simple, yet gourmet meals in the Halfway House, to growing Clovelly as a function venue and providing members with delicious meals on Friday nights and eventually, other times too.

We’re sure that you can all agree that Craig is bringing some exciting things to the Clovelly table! Another great offering by Craig are his frozen meals which bring restaurant-style cooking into your home. Every week Craig puts together a menu of a few select meals. You need to order by Sunday, for delivery on the following Thursday or collection at Clovelly Country Club the following Wednesday. See below for this week’s menu.

If you want in on these delicious and convenient meals, please make sure that your orders are in by Sunday evening, 17:00, for delivery on Thursday, 15th October – contactless- to your door! Clovelly members can collect their orders from the Halfway House on Wednesday, 14th October.

You can send your orders through to 082 356 0850 or There is a minimum order of R 250 for all deliveries, but for members collecting their orders at the Club, the minimum amount doesn’t apply.

All deliveries charged at R50 to the Southern Suburbs and Town. You can make your payment via EFT to the below banking details;

On Golf

Our Golf Manager, Hanko Bothma, would like to inform our members that as of Saturday, 10th October, the Golf Committee will be introducing a new formula to ensure a fair pay-out to everyone who achieves two-clubs. Golfers with lower handicaps understandably make up the bulk of our two-clubs as they achieve them more easily than golfers with higher handicaps. To promote fairness, the fundamental change being introduced is that the value of a two-club will now depend on the player’s ability.

To achieve this, we are assigned value per division as follows;

A Div = 1
B Div = 1.5
C Div = 2

Club Champs

Congratulations to Trevor Craig, who is a member of Riviera on Vaal Golf Club in Johannesburg too and just won their Club Champion trophy.

Remember, our Club Champs is coming up in November. Get your entries in at the Bookings Office and put yourself on the line to potentially become a Club Champion of Clovelly! You can download a form here. Bookings close on 02 November 2020.

In Pictures

Our Club President, Mr. Ackerman, who visited us a month ago and was still very weak after battling COVID-19, made a phenomenal recovery and was spotted down at the Range with his son and our Chairman, Jonathan Ackerman, hitting some balls. It is so wonderful to have him back and well!

Being situated in the midst of national parks certainly has its advantages! We are visited by all species of birds, different snakes, porcupines and some other small animals. How beautiful are these Cape lappet moth caterpillars? They feed on a wide variety of plants and no one is sure why they congregate like they are doing in this picture. Although striking caterpillars, they turn into a rather plain brown moth. You’ll be happy to know that the caterpillars are not aggressive, unlike this feisty little crab!

The Hobnobs Gang played on the most beautiful day and were kind enough to share their photos on Facebook. Paradise!

Isn’t it lovely to have our ladies socializing again? Our lovely Lavi Rend, Pat Quill, Birdie Jenkinson, Jacky White and Bruni Bensch all look so happy to enjoy a drink together after golf. We have such a great community for new ladies to join.

Jonathan Ackerman spoiled our Treasurer, Wizz Good, after he achieved his second hole-in-one last month. Well deserved, Wizz!

We held our first event after lockdown on Thursday, 1st October for our Probus group. Daniswa helped prepare the gourmet brownies for dessert after their chicken pie.
