These past few weeks have brought with them toasty sunshine and the robust return of the South Easter. Sweat on our brows, cooled by the crisp wind as we step outside, promises that summer is just around the corner. We are in the first of three days’ predicted rain which has given us respite from the heat and has rinsed the salt deposited by the breeze off of the greens. Oh, what a lovely time of year! We are thinking of our Swallows who can’t be with us and especially those in the UK who have entered into another lockdown. We do miss you and hope that you will be with us soon.

Thanks to the weather, our last dose of fertilizer, and the brilliant management of the course by our Interim Greenkeeper, Brian Dlutu, and his team with our Committees, the course is healthy and we’re ready for summer! With that being said, please note that placing has been lifted since Wednesday, 4th November. Also, our temporary tee markers won’t be out for much longer as the refurbishment of our tee markers is well underway.

A reminder that we will be closed over the weekends of the 14th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd of November for our Club Championships. If you forgot to enter, you may still be able to twist of Golf Manager’s arm, but do so soon! We have asked our fellow golf clubs if they will be willing to offer our members a reciprocal rate and so far Stellenbosch Golf Club has kindly offered a rate of R 250 to our members over those weekends, with golf carts at their member’s rate of R 280. We’ll keep you updated!

Tournaments & Events

We have had a busy few weeks, hosting the WPGU Clovelly Open, the Bridge Fund Managers Clovelly Junior Open and the Chaeli Campaign Golf Day, and it looks as if we’re only getting busier! After months of quiet, it has been great to have so many feet through the doors and we commend our staff and golfers for continuing the practices of social distancing and sanitizing in a time of COVID-19.

Well done to Willie Olivier from Atlantic Beach who won the Clovelly Open with a score of 70, just ahead of Ayden Senger. Our Clovelly Members flew our flag high with Matt Mills and Matt Cooper directly behind them with 70 points each, and Jan Stals and Isabella van Rooyen not far behind on 72 and 73 points. You make us proud!

Congratulations, also, to Jack Buchanan, pictured below, of Milnerton Golf Club for winning the Junior Open with a score of 69.

It was an honour to be part of the Chaeli Campaign Golf Day again. They have been hosting their golf day at Clovelly since 2007! An important and very special charity, it was so great to see how well-supported the Chaeli Campaign Golf Day is by our members. In fact, you stole the show, winning the first six places! Anything to avoid getting handed a toilet seat at prize-giving.

Well done to Grant Blake, Bob Thompson, David Beneke and Allan Jackson in first place.

A special golf day, although a little sad too, was ‘Bridget’s Final Swing’. Many of you will remember Bridget Woodhouse, our fun-loving, outspoken firecracker of a past Ladies’ Captain. Sadly, she is emigrating to the UK with her husband early next year and a ‘Final Swing’ was held in her honour. In Bridget-style, there were shots, there was food, there were multiple prizes and there was laughter in abundance. It was also great to have our June Featonby around for the day.

We are so grateful for Bridget’s passion for Clovelly and for the memories that we were able to make with her. We wish her the best in her new adventure and hope to meet again soon.

From the Pro Shop

Thank you to our members who took part in the Pro Shop’s ‘Beat the Pro’ activation this past Wednesday and congratulations to the winners who beat our Pro, Richard Shone, on Hole 11. They each received a shirt of their choice. All entrants received a discount voucher for the Pro Shop; don’t forget to use them!

Well done, to Ollie Malyon, pictured below left, who at the age of ten, managed to pip Richard and earned a shirt. Please keep an eye out for our next challenge. We look forward to welcoming you; this time to level up against our Pro Shop Manager, Iglin Grobbelaar.

Mizuno fan? Mizuno has launched a new, cutting-edge range of irons and you’ll have the opportunity to test them out and get professionally fitted by our Pro, Iglin Grobbelaar, and the Mizuno Team at Steenberg Golf Club on Tuesday, 17th November 2020. In Pictures

Congratulations to Liz Cameron, winning both the Haggis Trophy and November’s Bronze Medal Cup. Committee Member, Gill Davies, and Karen Kent tied for Silver.

Our Greens Staff, Tafadzwa, Panganai, Jola and Patrick, improving their golf skills with the assistance of MichellGolf. Every staff member received a voucher for a free lesson from MichellGolf and our hope is that we will all have an understanding, at the very least, of this amazing game.

What a shot! Our Captain, Greg Daly, under the watchful eyes of Vice-Chairman, Richard Goveia, and Chairman, Jonathan Ackerman.

That is it from us. Pop down to our teaching Professionals for some fine-tuning before the Champs next weekend, be joyful and take care!
