Welcome to our last official month of winter! After a quiet July, August seems to have brought with it an increase in activity at Clovelly which has forced us to put our hot chocolate down and get back into the swing of running a club. We are all for a bit of busyness though! Are any of you planning to attend Fish Hoek Beach’s Spring Splash next month? Remember that we will be Hollow Tyning the Monday and Tuesday after, in preparation for summer! As usual. office times will be adjusted over the period.

Thanks to feedback from our members, bunker rehabilitation was an important goal for the Greens Committee of Clovelly. Winter gave us the perfect opportunity to accomplish some of these goals. The bunker rehabilitation program has been progressing well, with projects completed on holes 2, 3, 10, and 17, and some more work to come on holes 1, 5 and 7.

As part of the rehabilitation, a large number of areas have had to be re-sodded. We would like to remind all of our golfers that all newly sodded areas are considered GUR under our local rules (displayed on the notice boards and at the Starter’s Hut). Also, whilst the newly sodded areas are recovering the bunkers will be in play.

These adjustments are going to improve the condition of the bunkers and make it easier for our course staff to maintain them. Ultimately, this will result in better playability for our golfers. We would like to thank you all for your patience and cooperation whilst we work on them.

RIP, Neil van Tonder

Sadly, we have received news of the passing of Niel van Tonder this past Saturday. Niel had been a member of Clovelly for ten years and was a regular golfer, often playing two or three times a week and often joined by his young son, Benjamin.

Niel was a much-loved member of our Seniors’ community; remembered as a “wonderful person” and “always smiling and cheerful”. Our thoughts go out to his family who lost a special husband and father and to our seniors, who have lost another special friend.

Niel’s funeral will be held at the King of Kings Church at the Corner Ou Kaapse Way & Buller Louw Drive, Sun Valley, on Thursday 8th August at 2.00pm.

Brian & Farai – touched by our Member’s Kindness

As many of you are aware, last Sunday, 28th July, tragedy also effected two of our staff members when a devastating fire destroyed 200 homes in Masiphumele. To make matters worse, this happened the day before a cold front that brought with it high winds and rain. Brian and Farai’s homes were amongst those destroyed and they were left with nothing. The City supplied Brian and Farai with metal sheeting enough for half a shack, and Clovelly provided the rest of the materials and staff to help rebuild. Brian and Farai worked through many nights and a wild storm to rebuild their homes.

Although devastating, the story that we want to tell is one about the silver lining behind the cloud. We contacted our members for donations, whether financial or material goods, and we were OVERWHELMED by your kindness and generosity. By the end of last week, their shacks were nearing completion and they were hoping to move their families in this weekend past. The donations have been gladly received (pictured above left) and the finances will be used to replace their beds, appliances, clothing and other contents, gradually turning their shack into homes. It is a slow process but both Brian and Farai are so excited and appreciative of your support. So a big thank you to everyone who contributed!
We are still looking for the above right clothing items, and if any of you would like to assist further, click the below button which will take you to BackaBuddy where you can donate to Brian and Farai.

There are still many struggling to recover from the fire in Masi. Many who have not been as fortunate as Brian and Farai to have the support of our members, If you have any clothing or home items, or food, please drop it off at Living Hope – Kommetjie Rd, Capri.

Annual Price Increases

We have emailed our members notification of the annual price increases for our bar and catering offerings which came in effect yesterday. They are as follows:

· Wine (red and white) 7% increase
· Whiskey 2% – 3% increase
· Brandy 7.4% – 9% increase
· Heineken products 6% increase

All food offerings from Carl’s Catering will increase by an average of 6% across both the Halfway and the Bar/Restaurant outlets.

Unfortunately, rising costs and the drought, which negatively impacted grape farming in South Africa, saw some increases higher than we had hoped. Looking at the bright side, we thank you for your continued support!

A Hole-in-One for Bruni!

We would like to wish Bruni Bensch, a member of Clovelly for twenty-two years, a hearty congratulations on her third hole-in-one at Clovelly! This time on the 11th hole, on Friday, 26th July.

Well done, Bruni! A fabulous achievement. Bruni’s only outstanding hole-in-one is for Hole 8. It would be wonderful if she had to achieve all four!

A Warm Welcome to Donnie in the Pro Shop

We are excited to welcome Donnie Tsai to the Pro Shop.

Donnie is one of MichellGolf’s high-performance students and a Clovelly league player. He has completed his PGA qualification, although still collecting hours, and you can find him coaching RAGA students and other golfers at the Range as a MichellGolf Assistant PGA Professional. Donnie is also a talented graphic designer and we are looking forward to incorporating his creations in future Clovelly and MichellGolf media. A driven high-achiever, we are sure that you will all enjoy interacting with him!

Alcohol Free Beers in the Bar

Our Bar Manager, Sebastian Brown, is happy to announce that we now have three brands of alcohol-free beer in the bar – Castle Free, Heineken 0 and Becks Blue.

Not only do alcohol-free beers have insignificant amounts of alcohol, but they also contain fewer calories and are said to help you recover after exercise, so perfect if you have just trekked up the 18th!

Now you can drive through roadblocks with ease and give your liver a rest while still enjoying the delicious flavour of beer!

Kids Events at the Range

We have the MichellGolf Junior Academy Open Day this month, as well our monthly Pitch n’ Putt Competition. We would love for you to attend both, and please invite your friends and their kids! Already a wonderful success, we are looking forward to creating a safe environment where kids can enjoy themselves whilst learning valuable skills.

Thank you to Clear Design for your support of our kids!

In Pictures

Victory Church held a kids ‘Christmas in July’ braai which saw our Course Manager, Steven Webber, dressing up as Santa Claus. All out of reindeers, his tractor was a convenient replacement. Coach Dave gave the kids a fun lesson and the day was enjoyed by everyone.

Steven Dunn eventually received his first ‘bike’ from his Dad, Ron. An important milestone in every kid’s life.

Club Captain, Ian McPherson, captured the below picture of a stunning rainbow that was above the club for most of the day a week ago. Don’t we live in a beautiful area of the world?

Congratulations to Evan Marais who played in the Stellenbosch SA Kids Golf Tournament and came first in his division! In our next newsletter, we will look at what some of our other juniors are doing. Our junior section is definitely going places. Thank you to MichellGolf and everyone else committed to the next generation of golfers!

That is us for this week. Before we go we would like to welcome our new members, Riaan Spreeth and Billy Burnett!

We hope that you all have a great couple of weeks ahead and we wish all the lovely ladies out there a Happy Women’s Day for Friday. Sebastian will be offering a double shot of Cruxland gin and a mixer for only R 25 to celebrate you!
