We’re sure that you have been inundated with pictures and articles celebrating the Springbok’s win this past Saturday, but it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t start this newsletter by rambling on about how proud we are of our national rugby team! What a great start to the month of November and what a great moment for this country. Our bar was buzzing and everyone, including our British Swallows who showed a great display of sportsmanship, celebrated our phenomenal victory!
Carl’s Christmas Lunch
With all of the excitement over the rugby, you may not have noticed our sneaky slip into November and the shopping centers that have already started decorating for Christmas. Less than two months away, bookings for Carl’s Christmas Lunch have begun! Please book now if you are hoping to join us. If you haven’t been before, you’re in for a real treat.
New Year’s Eve Party!
Another event that we would love for you to join is our very own New Year’s Party. We have had dinners in the past, but we’ll be ending off this year BIG with Mike McCully’s ‘Legends of Rock’ concert!
Carl will be braaiing on the deck and Mike and The Harmonix will begin playing our favorite hits from the 60s to the 90s at 21:30.
There is limited space and bookings for both the event and the braai have to be pre-paid. Please email Jessica on firstname.lastname@example.org or call 021 784 2111 to book your tickets and arrange payment. You can collect your tickets from the Bookings Office. We have opened bookings for our members early and will open to the public on November 15th.
DARG Golf Day
Back to the present; October has been a successful month for golf days. We’ve had the Annual Hindu, Noordhoek Farm Village, WP Nomads, George Whitefield College and the Chaeli Campaign Golf Days. To end the month off, we had the DARG Golf Day; one of our favorites!
The DARG Golf Day managed to raise R 140 000 towards the ‘Domestic Animal Rescue Group’s’ expenses. This will help the organization a great deal as its costs, including vet bills and community outreaches, add up to an average of R 240 000 every month.
DARG, based in Hout Bay, does such amazing work with abused and neglected animals. Their rescue, Mr Ray, (pictured above – delighted as he got to get up close to Rosko Specman, Stix Ngcobo and Rugby Sevens’ Captain, Shakes Soyizwapi) was an abused ‘fighting’ dog and look at him now! The below are Mr. Ray’s ‘before and after’ pics. Healthy and the sweetest dog, he has now been invited to attend the Sevens training sessions and will be receiving his own rugby jersey!
DARG is looking for someone to sponsor the player’s halfway meals and dinners for next year’s golf day which will take place on Thursday, 22nd October 2020. Please get in touch with Debra (An Approved DARG Fundraiser) on email@example.com or 083 707 4777 if you are interested.
New Stroking and Line of Sight Relief
As of the 1st of this month, our new strokes have been in place. Our old wood signboards marking the course holes are being removed and we eagerly wait for the completion of the new granite signboards. Please use our new scorecards as a reference for the stroke on each hole until the boards are done.
We, with the assistance of the Golf Committee and Inus and Helene Marias, representatives of the WPG Rules Association, recently embarked on a full audit of our course in terms of the R&A Rules of Golf.
A number of important findings from this audit will be implemented over the coming year, however, one that we will implement immediately is to remove relief for line of sight from the tree screens, found between the 4th/5th and the 13th/14th holes, with effect from 1st November 2019. The screens should be treated as Immovable Obstructions and the normal Rule 16.1 relief options will be applicable.
We have emailed our members more information on these matters. Please feel free to speak to our General Manager, Paul Stoner, if you have any questions.
New to the Bar
Bar Manager, Sebastian Brown, has organized Van Loveren white and red alcohol-free wine for the bar! All the flavour and none of the consequences!
Whilst we are on the subject of wine, Sebastian is trying to arrange a wine tasting event toward the second half of this month. Keep an eye out for flyers in the bar.
Congratulations to James Eckley who achieved a Hole-in-One on Hole 11 On Wednesday, 23rd October. Always a happy event; well done!
B Division – Ruari and Adam Richardson
C Division – Francis and Tao Lacey
Coach Dave had spooky surprises and prizes and everyone had a great time.
We had our annual visit from a UCT team of PhD students who are running a research program on Black Sparrow Hawks. They ring and monitor the chicks during breeding season every year.
This year’s Friendship Cup saw 60 players attend, with ladies joining from Westlake, Steenberg and Simons Town Golf Clubs. The winners of the competition were Karen Kent, Helen Barrett, Bronwen Gray and Anne Keable. The ladies also celebrated Dawn English, who had turned 94 the day before!
November’s Monthly Mixed Competition, sponsored by David Liebrecht of Pick n Pay Clothing, was won by Jan Stals van Rooyen, Isabella van Rooyen, Zara Lekeur and Dave himself, with 56.25 points.
