Can you believe that according to Expat Explore, autumn has arrived? Today also marks a year since the first COVID-19 case was reported in South Africa! The year seems to have flashed by in the blink of an eye, but we’re still hoping for many more hot, sunny days before the rain and cooler temperatures arrive.
Thank you to Gill Green for snapping this gorgeous sunset. We assume that smoke from the Stellenbosch fires played a part in its beauty.
Since the Disaster Management Act’s regulations eased, we have so enjoyed having our full Clovelly Team back on the premises. It has also been great to have our bar operating, to have had our first prize-givings again and we know many of our members are relieved to be able to touch the flag pins and bunker rakes once more.
Now that we are back on Level 1, we are looking forward to the return of the CLUB DRAW, sponsored by Lyall Morgan and Associates, and the establishment of our Friday Night Restaurant! Whilst we will only hold the draw once a month from now on, Craig will be offering a selection of tasty meals every Friday evening from 17:00-20:00; last meal orders to be taken at 19:30. To celebrate our first evening, we have secured the awesome Gordon Rocker to entertain our diners and Fred Fautley will kindly facilitate the draw.
Please note that seating is limited and we only have a select number of tables open for reservations. The rest of the tables will be first-come-first-served. You can email Jessica on firstname.lastname@example.org to make a booking. Visitors are welcome!
The influx of new members continues and we would like to wish the following a very warm welcome to Clovelly; Ernst Burger, Andre De Bruin, Brendan Hayes, Hendre Horne, Tom Roos, Mark Van Der Walt, Cameron Bennetts, Michael Lunn, Oliver Theron, Annick Lobelle, Maurice and Thomas Strijp, Liam Brien, Christopher Bryant, Dominic Winton, Bryce Fisher, Malcolm Human, Chase Pargeter, Johan Van Rensburg, and Craig Rafferty-Marais. We hope that you find Clovelly your ‘home away from home’ and make many happy memories here!
Following on from our AGM, we would like to start this newsletter with a very happy announcement that Brian Dlutu has been promoted, officially, to Greenkeeper of Clovelly Country Club. Having worked here for 12 years, with 5 of those in close contact with our prior Course Manager, Steven Webber, Brian showed remarkable commitment and capability over these past few months with limited staff members and unique circumstances! We are very proud!
Congratulations, Brian. The Western Province Turf Manager’s Association visited us a couple of weeks ago for a networking exercise over a round of golf. It was a great moment for us to have both Brian and Steven, who is still very much a part of the Clovelly Family as an Honorary Life Member and Course Consultant, join them. Greenkeepers, often on the sidelines, are at the heart of every golf club and we are very grateful for our own!
We also take great pride in announcing our new Ladies Committee; from top left and going clockwise, ending in the middle, are Janeen Alford (Captain), Anne Keable (Handicap Secretary), Jane Hall (Treasurer), Gill Davies (Vice-Captain), Carol Reid (Swallow Representative), Gill Green (Secretary) and Birdie Jenkinson (League Secretary).
This committee has come in like a breath of fresh wind, and although we miss our lovely ladies who, after many years of service, left to enjoy golf without all of the responsibilities, we are looking forward to the next two years with Janeen, Anne, Jane, Gill, Carol, Gill, and Birdie.
We will share our Men’s Golf Committee with you in our next newsletter. We just need to get them in the same place at the same time so we can update our photos.
As we head out of an unusual ‘high season’, we would like to bring to your attention some updates concerning golf.
The first addresses the implementation of the Handicap Allowance and Playing Handicap, of which GolfRSA has made the decision that all clubs should implement Rule 6.2a – Playing Handicap Calculation. (Referring to Appendix C) from the beginning of this month.
This would mean that for Betterball and Alliance formats we will remain with the 85% Allowance, as previously implemented, and we will now need to introduce a 95% Allowance for Individual and Medal. You can click the button below to read Appendix C, which will give the appropriate allowance for each specific format. In order to calculate your Playing Handicap for the day there will be two immediate options:
1) The HNA App allows you to enter your Allowance % for the day and automatically gives you your Playing Handicap.
2) Conversions tables will be available at the Bookings Office and Proshop
It is very important to remember that a Playing Handicap should not affect a player’s score when entering your Adjusted Gross on the app for handicapping purposes. Your original Course Handicap, before the allowance, determines the score to be entered on the HNA app. Thank you for your patience with these changes!
Our second update is that our Chammy and Singles Matchplay knock-outs are back!! Boetie Muzzell and Gerrit van Zyl are the pair to beat for the Chammy Cup, and we’re sure that Ron Dunn will do his best to put his name on the Gus Ackerman Trophy for a third time.
Below are the entry forms. Please fill them out and send them to the Bookings Office, with payment, to enter before the cut-off date of 29 March.
You’ll be happy to hear that you can now top-up your spending account through your Clubmaster app on your phone, safely and easily. Below are the steps;
1. Select ‘Spending Account Balance’
2. Select ‘Top-Up’
3. Input the amount you wish to top-up with
5. Input your card details and select ‘Pay Now’
You can then purchase rounds and items from the Pro Shop, Halfway House and Bar on your account, giving you access to the 10% member’s discount.
Craig’s Frozen Meals
Craig’s next frozen meals menu is available. Get your orders in for next week and enjoy a scrumptious meal, cooked by a chef, in the comfort of your home. Bon appetit!
A big congratulations to Evan Marais and Ollie Malyon who were selected to represent Western Province in a matchplay event against Boland two weeks ago. Evan’s Team (A) won 36-33, and unfortunately, Ollie’s team (B) lost. Better luck next time, Ollie!
Evan has been selected to represent Western Province for a second time, although this time inter-provincially, and he sets off the Katberg in the Eastern Cape to play three rounds of golf from the 20th to the 22nd of March. We wish him the best of luck!
Both young golfers are totally committed and passionate about golf and we are so proud that they have been recognized, especially as they are only 10 and 11 years old. Well done, guys! You should be incredibly proud of your achievements.
We held the first of our 9-hole Sundowner Series, in partnership with Under Armour and KWV, on the last Friday of February. We had a full field of eager players and bookings have already been made for the next event on Friday 26th March.
Remember that the best betterball scores over 6 rounds wins an Under Armour makeover worth R5000 each at the grand finale in December. Thank you to Under Armour and KWV for a great event! You can find more information in the poster further down.
It made our day to see Gerald van Heerden, who had just come out of hospital after major heart surgery, come up to the club to pick up his 5l bottle of KWV 5 year brandy that he had won in a KWV raffle! Take care, Gerald.
Let us end this newsletter with a gorgeous photo of the 17th Hole. We hope that you all have a great week! Look after yourselves. We’ll see you on the course.
