From the Desk of the GM

It has been three weeks since we opened and operations seem to be getting smoother by the day. I cannot say enough how great it is to have our members flowing through the doors again and to hear the sound of drivers being hit over the trees on the 10th tee! On behalf of the staff, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your ongoing support of our Club.

I thought I would take the time to update you on the current position of the Club after opening, from an operational perspective. Firstly, as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to spike in South Africa I would like to remind everyone that we should not become complacent. Scientific evidence is leaning towards the potential of becoming infected increasing and COVID-19 may be closer to home than we think. The reality is that one or more of us, either staff or members, will be infected at some point. Therefore, we need to behave as though we may already be infected, although asymptomatic, and think of those alongside us. It is imperative that if you suspect infection or have been officially tested positive, to be responsible by staying at home and informing the Club and those that you have interacted with, such as the other players in the fourball that you played with. Be assured that any information shared with us will be held with the utmost confidentiality.

By now, we are all aware that Carl’s Catering is no longer with us. In order to provide an offering, although limited, we re-purposed our Bar Staff into the Halfway House and have been selling cooldrinks and snacks/sweets. We also moved our coffee machine downstairs, much to the delight of many of our members! While this was happening we continued to explore our options in terms of re-initiating a food offering that meets our member’s needs while complying with the Disaster Management Act and relevant directives.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that as of tomorrow, Saturday, 4th July 2020, we will be introducing a simple, fresh “grab n’ go” style offering at our Halfway House. We’re still perfecting our menu, but for our golfers joining us tomorrow morning, you can expect a delicious breakfast roll with some fresh toppings accompanied by a steamy cup of coffee, or a healthier alternative of a muesli, fruit and yogurt bowl. In the afternoon we will have a burger bar available, along with a selection of pre-packed sandwiches and wraps. From classic Chicken and Mayo to new and exciting Caprese and Teriyaki Chicken! For those looking for something even lighter, an assortment of muffins, fruits and light salads will also be available throughout the day. This is a new adventure and we welcome any input or suggestions during this time. Vivian, Nono and Florence have been hard at work in the kitchen and are looking forward to serving you!

Lastly, I would like to thank each one of our course staff for their massive efforts on the course. During the lockdown, we functioned with 4 out of 22 staff and now we are functioning with 50% of our already reduced staffing numbers. This means that there are 8 staff on a weekly rotation, which is just a fraction of our original compliment before the lockdown. Despite this, the course continues to improve as it receives their attention. Please remember that going forward, we will need to adjust our expectations with regards to course conditioning as we will be functioning with just 70% of our staff and 50% of our usual operating budget. This does not mean that we will be slacking off, but it does mean that there may be areas that appear to have reduced in quality. The course now is close to our new 100%. With limited resources, we will continue to ensure Clovelly is consistently regarded as one of the best-conditioned golf courses in South Africa.

To achieve this, we will need assistance from our members! After three months of lockdown, members took to fairways and greens which had recovered perfectly from divots and pitch marks. Unfortunately, after three weeks of predominantly member golf, this is not the case anymore. We need to take ownership and do our bit to not only keep our course beautiful but to respect the hard work that our course staff put into it. Carry a sandbag and pitchfork, repairs your divots and pitch marks and make sure your fellow member is doing the same. Let’s all work together.

Kind Regards,
Paul Stoner

Chammy & Matchplay Draws

Two of our most anticipated knock-out tournaments of the year are underway! Jan Badenhorst was Matchplay Champion of 2019, seeing his name engraved on our Gus Ackerman Trophy, and David van Eyk with Ian Hutchison are the men to beat for the Chammy Cup.

Please click on the buttons above to download the draw for your respective tournament. Good luck to our players and may the best men win! Please remember that the name on top has to organize the match. Our member’s contact details are in our diaries and you can contact them through the Spotlight Social app, via direct chat.

Spotlight Social Winner

Speaking about Spotlight Social, thank you to everyone who has signed up to our Spotlight Social Community app! So far, we have had 445 members join us. We would like to hear how you are finding the app and which features are particularly useful.

This app is going to be instrumental to Clovelly Country Club going forward. We have already seen that it is a great platform for members to ask questions and interact and we are particularly enjoying the photos that our members are sharing.  Now that our competitions are up and running, we will be posting the results onto the app and we have already loaded the upcoming events for July. Most useful, perhaps, is the ability to send notifications and communications to our members instantly.

Back in May, we announced that we would run a lucky draw for 10 free rounds. All you would have to do is download the app, upload a profile picture and send our Club Administrator, Jessica, an email confirming that you followed those steps. Thank you to everyone who entered!

We are happy to announce that Andrew Dallas is our lucky winner! Congratulations and thank you for the support!

Spotted at Clovelly

Club Professional, Alan Michell, was lucky enough to share a round with Jeremy Killian, Peter Karmis and Herschelle Gibbs! This was Alan’s first time playing with Herschelle in 34 years after they played in the same WP Under 13 cricket team. Luckily, they had perfect conditions and great company. Both Peter and Herschelle managed to sneak in 1 up.

RIP, Colin

We hope that you all have a great week going forward. We’re saddened to learn of the recent passing of one of our special Seniors, Colin Mason, but comforted to know that he passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his beloved family. Colin loved his golf, playing two or three times a week when he could, and he especially cherished the Monday Senior’s School. We will all miss him. Let us all raise a glass to Colin and head into this week with an appreciation for life, with all its complexities.

Kind Regards,
The Clovelly Team
