Two golfers are ready to play on the 11th tee as a funeral cortege passes by. The first player stops, doffs his cap, and bows his head as the cortege passes.
“That was a really nice thing to do,” the second golfer says. “It’s good to see there is still some respect in the world.”
“Well, it’s only right,” the first golfer replies. “I was married to her for 35 years.”

It is good to laugh! With the fifth month of the year almost over, winter is going to be with us before we know it and we are looking forward to keeping our spirits high and surrounding ourselves with joy during the cold months to come. We are hoping for a great rainy season that will fill our dams, clean our streets and hydrate our Course and farms.

Whilst we are kept cosy within the walls of our homes and clubhouse, we spare a thought for those on the streets with nowhere to go. Tony Webb of Fine&Country has secured two paintings by a well-known artist, Mollie Townsend, from St James, and he plans to auction these and give the proceeds to Living Hope, who are working with the homeless in the South Peninsula. The paintings start at R 2000 & R 5000. Please email Tony on if you are interested.

Father’s Day at Clovelly

Clovelly has always been a great place for father-son bonds. A wonderful example can be seen in the Ackerman family; Mr. Ackerman, our current Club president, has been coming to Clovelly since the beginning of its time with his father, then Club President and Founder, Gus Ackerman. The habit continued with his son, Jonathan, joining him regularly, and at the Walk of Appreciation in December, we were all moved to see three generations of the Ackerman family play together. There are many families who share similar stories and warm memories that will be cherished for years to come.

This Father’s Day we would like to celebrate that special bond with an Introduction to Golf at the Range, followed by a meal at Amor’s Bistro. Bookings can be made throughout the day, and moms are welcome to join for the meal too.

Of course, we will also have Carl’s tried and tested Father’s Day Lunch. Carl is offering another delicious spread which is sure to be a firm favorite.

Harry Solomon

As the Harry Solomon season progresses, our teams have met with some fierce challenges from the other clubs in our pool. Our first fixture was against Steenberg who had made it all the way to the final last season, which presented a tough task as an opening match. Despite this, our side rose to the occasion and managed to secure a 4½  to 3½ point victory, after securing 1½ crucial points away. Following this was a disappointing fixture against Belville, where despite the best efforts of the away side securing 2 points, our home side only managed two halves, resulting in a final tally of 3 points to Belville’s 5 points.

This loss meant it would be vital for us to win our next fixture against Atlantic Beach to stay in the running for a quarter-final spot. Our away side performed brilliantly once again, not losing a single match and securing 3 away points. While at home, it appeared as if Atlantic had sent their stronger side in the hope of securing valuable away points, which almost paid off. However, a solid performance from Phil Mason and George Bowes to win their match, and a clutch putt from Ron Dunn on the 18th hole for a birdie, saw them halving their match and sneaking us into the next fixture! A 4 ½ to 3 ½ point victory resulted.
It was great to see the comradery and banter afterwards and let’s hope that we can harness this fighting spirit and carry it into the next fixture against Royal Cape this coming Saturday. It will most certainly be a test, and as always an important step towards securing a knockout spot.
Above are Ron Dunn and Jan Badenhorst, battling it out under the setting sun on the 16th green.

Tour Operators and Hotel Representatives

Last Thursday we invited a number of tour operators and hotel representatives to join us for a “Clovelly Experience”. Although they often refer their clients to Clovelly, we realized that many of them do not know what Clovelly has to offer and as a show of appreciation, as well as to expose them to our wonderful club, we had them over for snacks, a game of golf or an introduction to golf at the Range, and lunch.

Everyone met in the morning at Amor’s Bistro for some delicious muffins, pastries and coffee before heading off to the Course or the Range, depending on their skill level. Coach Dave, with the help of MichellGolf High-Performance Students, Donny and Richard, gave an entertaining lesson on golf swings, before heading over to the putting green and everyone met at 13:00 on the deck for a wonderful lunch supplied by Carl.

The event was a fabulous success and we are hoping to have more in the future. The weather was perfect and all attendees had a great time and were so complimentary of the Club.

Juniors at Clovelly

Clovelly’s junior activity is growing in leaps and bounds and we have the commitment of Coaches Mike, Alan, and Dave from MichellGolf, as well as Junior Development Committee Member, Jan van Rooyen, to thank for it. As a whole, Clovelly has embraced our next generation of golfers and we are excited to watch them grow.

We had our second round of the WPG Clovelly Junior Winter Series, sponsored by Taylormade and Clear Design, last Sunday. This is part of a four-part series for U13 and U15 golfers, taking place over winter.

Despite the blustery berg wind that hit us last Sunday, outstanding golf was played by these young golfers. Jack Buchanan of Atlantic Beach won the U15 A Division (Medal) with a gross score of 71 and Tristan Boise from Milnerton won U13 with a score of 76. B Division played Individual Stableford and the U15 was won by Uwen Januarie from Fairview, with 31 points. U13 was won by Booye Walters from Bellville on 36 points.

We must mention our own Olly Malyon, who came second in the U13 B Division, shooting 94 on the Course, despite being only 9! In the last match, he came third, so we’re hoping that in the third part of the series, scheduled for June, he will come out on top! Well done, Olly!

We also recently had our monthly Pitch n Putt for the kids down at the Range. Over forty children showed up, with twenty-seven kids taking part in the competition. Evan Marais walked away with the top score of level par 27. Well done, Evan!
Our Pitch n Putt competitions are really gaining momentum and always turn out to be a great way to spend a Saturday. There are boerewors rolls and other activities available. Last weekend even Golf Director, Paul Stoner, couldn’t stay away and ended up playing soccer with some of the kids. Anyone can come. Details of the next competition are in the poster below.

Thank you to Clear Design, who so generously create the trophies for us. As you can see top right, they are awesome trophies and the kids are so proud to receive them!

On Friday evening we had Mike McCully and The Harmonix at Clovelly, performing their hit shot “That 80’s Show!”. This event sold out in a week when advertised at the Kalk Bay Theatre, and we hope that it will be one of many more hosted by Clovelly in the future. They had the audience up on their feet, even Florence joined in the dancing!

Friday was quite a busy night! Along with the tribute show, we also held our second round of 9-hole ExpressGolf as well as our usual Friday field. Liam Roelofse declared that his round of ExpressGolf was one of the most fun that he had ever had, and this is not the first time that we have heard this! We are sure to host this event again in the future so if you have missed out you will have another opportunity to join us!

Phil Mason, feeling the love after winning the lucky draw on Friday night, flashes Manager, John Spyker, a heart. Well done, Phil!

Below, Glint Academy who are part of MichellGolf’s program, join the Thursday Cobra Club, which gives young kids an opportunity to play three holes on the Course. As you can imagine, this is a big deal and is always looked forward to!

Below, Ladies Committee Member, Janeen Alford, gives June Harrison, the week’s Individual Stableford winner, her prize. Well done, June.

After playing at Clovelly a couple of times and declaring that they can’t get enough of our beautiful club, the Dave Lewis group from the UK returned, this time challenging the Clovelly Committee to a match. Greg Daly, Dave Thompson, Ian McPherson, John Spyker, Stephen Thomas and Matt Mills met them on the tee two Thursdays ago and proceeded to beat them by miles. We guess practice makes perfect! Lunch followed and all in all it was a great day!
