We hope our readers have had a wonderful week, wherever you are in the world!

Life in Cape Town seemed unusually extreme the past few days. Beginning last Wednesday as a result of a cyclone in the Southern Ocean, our coast was battered with enormous, powerful waves – much to the delight of a few fearless surfers and to the awe of the rest of us. You can view a few of the spectacular images/videos and read more here. Following the crazy swell, was a weekend of scorching temperatures – reaching 45° in Table Bay This broke the previous record by 3° and was the first time that Cape Town was the hottest location in Africa, phew! Since then, we have been hanging onto our hats as our South Easter returned with a vengeance. At least it’s cool!

Our Golf Manager, Hanko, captured this beautiful photo at sunrise last Thursday – how peaceful! The peahen below was captured by our Vice-Chairman, Richard Goveia.

As usual, we would like to start this newsletter by welcoming our new members; Vanessa Dekker, Russell Egypt, Glenn Harvey, Kevin Jacques, Allan Raaff, Anthony Shaw, Corder Tilney, Glen Watson, Ithandile Dlutu, Matthew Graser, Christian Louw, Liesl Le Roux, Liza Sutcliffe, Nico Venter, Dylan Binda. Goodbye and good luck!

Current affairs

Summer is generally a time when our attention is focused on the course as turf needs a little more consideration than usual due to the high temperatures and volume of traffic. We have applied the second application of bulk fertilizer to the greens and they are super healthy, despite this last heatwave. The stress of the heat did slow down the growth levels, which actually improved the greens’ playability! As a result of our Greenkeeper, Brian’s, careful water management and pro-active grooming in December, we have consistent playing surfaces. There have been early signs of fungus on the greens and some warning signs of a pest infestation – common at this time of year – and both of these have been treated accordingly.

Summer is also a time for planning. Planning for our AGMS scheduled for the last week of February and planning for our Clovelly Festival Week which will run from Monday 7th March to Sunday 13th March. Please note the “save the date” below. We’re celebrating everything Mexican this year and look forward to a fun week of music, food and awesome prizes!

Terry Bensted and Bill Hope started the year off on a high note, both achieving hole-in-ones on the 16th hole! Congratulations. Terry and Bill! May this set the tone for your year ahead.

Other well-deserved congratulations go to Kaitlyn Van De Vyver, a young golfer who recently joined our Clovelly Family. She’ll be joining Isabella van Rooyen in the GolfRSA Women’s National Squad for 2022! These young ladies are some of South Africa’s most promising open amateur and junior golfers and we’re really looking forward to what 2022 has in store for them. Well done and the best of luck!

Another golf achievement was Mike McElhone’s and Mike Richard’s win of the 2021 9-hole “Sundowner Series”, sponsored by Under Armour and KWV! After 9 matches, they walked away with the final prize of a R5000 Under Armour makeover each, not to mention the prizes they won during the series.

We expected a similar series for the year, however, we’re currently waiting on a big announcement from Under Armour regarding the way this series will work and when the first match will be. Keep an eye out for the announcement!

Last, but not least, congratulations to Gareth and Kiara on their lovely wedding! We were so honored to play a role in this day. Fun and love were in the air! We wish them all the best for their lives together.

That is pretty much all from us! Please remember that orders for Craig’s delicious frozen meals must be in by noon tomorrow and please support the CMASA raffle in the Pro Shop! Posters for both are below.

Lastly, Steenberg is hosting the Investec Women’s Open from 30th March to 2nd April. If any of our members are interested in volunteering their time to live score on each hole / TV spot / update the leaderboard / or act as a rover please get in touch with Hanko on golf@clovelly.co.za. They need 70 volunteers each day! The volunteers must be over the age of 16.

We hope that you all have a wonderful weekend ahead. We’ll be running the below specials in the bar from this evening to the end of Sunday:
