Happy Friday to our readers! We hope you are all ready for a restful, joyful weekend. If you are one of our lady members, please remember that entries for the WP Women’s Amateur Championships close today at noon. If you haven’t entered yet, this is your last chance! You can enter online here. This is also a friendly reminder that entries for our Club Championships will be closing on Monday, 2nd November – just a few days away. We always have a number of members enter after the closing date. Don’t be that member! You can download the entry forms from here or pick one up from the Bookings Office.
Can you believe that we have had another 22 members join us since our last newsletter? We would like to wish Deon Basson, Anton Chait, James and Joseph Fisher, Gary Gold, Thomas Greussing, John Rice, Breti Schultz, Richard and Hayden Blanckensee, Elijah and Clinton Werner, Roxy Holman, Arther Safiriano, Alex Berger, Hendrik Botha, Tristan De Beer, Jonathan Slack, Paul Streicher, Torbin Lassen, Bryan Peterson and Kristian Wise a very warm welcome to the Clovelly Family. We wish you many happy memories at this beautiful club.
These past two weeks have felt much like life used to before COVID-19 and the lockdown. We were privileged to host the Ackerman Championships, a prestigious world amateur ranking event that has been going on for forty years and sees women golfers from all over the country come to compete.
Well done to Kaylah Williams of Durbanville Golf Club, who not only won the Gus Ackerman Trophy with gross scores of 72, 72 and 66, but also joined Iliska Verwey to hold the women’s course record of 66. Iliska achieved this course record 9 years ago when taking part in the Ackerman Championships of 2011. We host the event every alternate year.
On the subject of golf, please note that as per GolfRSA’s recommendations, we have removed the rakes from the bunkers and ask that you do not touch the flag poles. Thank you.
We now have the WP Clovelly Open, the Bridgefund Clovelly Junior Open and the Chaeli Campaign and Noordhoek Farm Village “Pete de Bruin” Golf Days to look forward to before our Club Champs begin on the 14th of November.
Update on the Raymond Ackerman Golf Academy
We have been enjoying the sounds of youth that returned with the RAGA students in mid-September. The students have been separated into two groups of 13 and 14 and each group comes in twice a week. They are thrilled to be back, which is something to boast about in an educational setting! For those of our members who do not know about the Raymond Ackerman Golf Acadamy, this is a special youth development program that identifies underprivileged children in the communities close to us and gives them a platform to assist their studies, learn valuable life skills towards the President’s Award and take up golf. Their headquarters are situated on the top floor of Clovelly.
The RAGA Team, made up of Annette Champion, Shaddie Valayadum, Roxy Holman and Carel Coetzee, deserve a round of applause for their determination to ensure that our students continued to receive academic support throughout the lockdown, which meant studying from home. When they found out that many of the students were distance-learning using only their phones, the Grade 10s and 11s were loaned RAGA laptops and the Grade 12s were donated laptops by Mrs. Ackerman. They all had access to online tuition and received data packages and welfare support in the form of gift cards for Pick n’ Pay.
Upon returning to Clovelly, 14 more laptops were purchased for the Grade 8s and 9s. These laptops are individually assigned and can be booked out so the students can work from home and should we enter another lockdown, they will have the tools necessary to continue with their education sufficiently.
Although all 27 students have laptops, they are in need of laptop bags so that they can carry their laptops safely between school, home and RAGA. If any of our members have laptops bags that they are able to donate these would be most appreciated. Alternatively, we can purchase laptops bags for students for just R 200 per student and would love your sponsorship?

Dawn’s 95th Birthday
An absolute highlight of the week was celebrating Dawn English’s birthday. A member since 1978, Dawn still plays golf twice a week at least and has only recently started using a cart. It’s very clear that Dawn has won the hearts of many, with balloons, cake, bouquets of flowers and other gifts brought for her.
Thank you to Pat Quill for her lovely photos and happy birthday, Dawn. We wish you many more wonderful years to come!
Craig’s Frozen Meals
We’re were pleased to hear that some of our members ordered frozen meals from Craig this week! They really look delicious and are super convenient. Below are the options for this week.
Please remember that your orders have to be in by Sunday, at 17:00 by the latest and that minimum orders don’t apply to members collecting their meals from Clovelly on next Wednesday afternoon.
For members who ordered last week; Craig has put together a couple of heating instructions for you to follow. For the Hoisin Beef, it is best to defrost and heat in the microwave for 3 mins. For both the Butter Chicken Curry and Vegan Falafel you should preheat your oven to 180 degrees and then cover your dishes with foil and let them cook for 40 mins if you’re cooking from frozen. Or defrost and cook for 20 to 25 mins. Rice and quinoa dishes are best heated in the microwave. Easy peasy!

From the Pro Shop
There are just a couple of booking slots available to join our Pro Shop Manager, Iglin Grobbelaar, at Steenberg Golf Club on Friday 30th October for a TaylorMade fitting to optimize your equipment to match your game. You can head over to TaylorMade’s website or scan the barcode to book your slot.
These specials will also be ending at the end of this month so if you see anything that catches your eye, please pop in soon. You can view the below deals and more here.
Our Captain, Greg Daly, sent in the below photos of our Treasurer, Wizz Good, trying to escape a water hazard. Instead of taking relief, we admire our Treasurer’s optimism to defy your typical golfer’s luck. He took a gamble and ended up losing his ball in the rough. Thanks for the pic, Greg!
In our last newsletter, we let you know that we were about to apply our annual dose of fertilizer to the course. It is still early days, but you can definitely notice the difference between the two pictures below!
That’s it for now. Enjoy the last few days of October. We are looking forward to summer and are holding thumber that our dear Swallows will be able to return.
