“I can’t wait to wake up tomorrow morning, and find out what it’s going to feel like then. It’s just going to be incredible!” Shane Lowry on winning The 148th British Open in his home country, Ireland.

What a brilliant weekend for golf! Few thought that Shane Lowry would win The Open, and after a sensational four days of golf, you can’t help but be happy for the guy. A deserved win. Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland was also fantastic, showcasing the true beauty of links golf wonderfully.

In celebration of The Open, we planned a slight twit for Saturday’s competition. Players got to select their favourite professional golfer in The Open, to be their ‘partner’. At the end of the day, their individual stableford score was added to the professional’s stableford score, off scratch, to determine the overall winners. Some of the most popular selections were Brooks Koepka (what a year he has had!), Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry (the local boy!). Others showed their patriotism and selected the likes of Erik van Rooyen, Branden Grace, Dylan Fritteli and Louis Oosthuizen. Moving Day finished up and the scores were totalled, revealing our top 3 for Saturday as follows:

1st – Yusuf Meyer (40 points) + Tommy Fleetwood (41 points, 5 under) = 81 points
2nd – Grant Rustin (36 points) + Shane Lowry (44 points, 8 under) = 80 points
3rd – Peter Kilian (37 points) + Rikkie Fowler (41 points, 5 under) = 78 points c/i

Sunday was jolly, with a Junior Pitch n’ Putt on the Range with Coach Dave and the third round of our Clovelly Junior Winter Series, both sponsored by Clear Design who also created the awesome trophies above.

What a day it was – the club was buzzing! The weather played its part with a truly stunning winter’s day. As the day drew to a close everyone settled down to catch the closing holes of The Open. Shane Lowry had a fantastic three rounds and a one-over-par final round saw him claim The Open 2019 title. It was the first time an Irishman had won it on home soil in almost 60 years! Our afternoon golfers also kept an eye on their selected professionals to see how they finished the tournament and when all was said and done the following golfers were crowned our 2019 Open Champions:

1st – Wimm Brown (39 points) + Brooks Koepka (33 points, 3 over) = 72 points
2nd – Rob Pilkington (37 points) + Tommy Fleetwood (33 points, 3 over) = 70 points
3rd – Isabella van Rooyen (37 points) + Tommy Fleetwood (33 points, 3 over) = 70 points c/o

It was a great weekend and a fantastic opportunity for us all to watch and enjoy some great golf. We are already looking forward to the start of the Golf Major season next year!

Christmas in July

Our Ladies held their annual Christmas in July competition and meal, which is always a nice bit of festivity in the middle of winter. Winning the competition with a total of 85 points were Margaret Macdonald, Karen Kent, Karen Denman and Lavi Rend. Deanna Lynn won ‘Best Hat’.

Joining the ladies were June Watson (WP Golf) and Chris Goldsbury. Chris donated R 5000 to the Carol Goldsbury Fund which aims to assist junior golfers in the Western Province. We all remember Carol fondly.

Mandela Day

Mandela day is sure to stir the best in all of us in South Africa, and Carl and Bibi from Carl’s Catering are no exception. For a while, Carl has been feeding underprivileged children in Ocean View. Last Thursday he had the privilege of filling sixty-seven bellies!

Thank you, Carl, for your big heart and to the members to have donated to Carl, helping him provide his nutritious soup.

Clovelly is pretty quiet at the moment, other than our Pro-Am coming up this Thursday, which will see golfing professionals from all over the Western Cape competing at Clovelly, and we are content to enjoy the last of these winter months. Yes, only one more to go until spring arrives!

We wish you all a great week!
