We hope that you are all looking forward to a relaxing weekend with moments of joy between friends and family. After a couple of cloudy, windy days with some good, hard downpours, we are anticipating a gorgeous sunny day tomorrow before the next cold front comes in. This time of year in Cape Town is an opportunity to live dangerously! To pack a jacket or costume? Plan for a hike or batten down the hatches? Who knows.

When living dangerously, please keep in mind that some provinces have reportedly entered their third waves of coronavirus and we need to be vigilant and mindful of our habits. A reminder that all persons arriving at Clovelly must pass through the Pro Shop to have their temperatures taken and must sanitize regularly whilst on the premises. Masks are to be worn at all times, unless you are eating/drinking at your table or on the golf course, sufficiently distanced from other golfers. The last things we want are for our older folk to be locked away in their retirement homes or to lose any loved ones. Thank you for your support and compassion.

Once again, we don’t have too much to talk about in this newsletter. We would like to welcome new members; Craig Hastings, Keith Hosking, Kenneth and Rush Payle, Kyle Reinecke, Gideon Joubert and Matthew Smith. Please take up our Golf Professionals, Mike and Alan Michell, on their offer of a free lesson and remember that our Chairman and other Governing Body members would appreciate a game with you! Hanko Bothma, our Golf Manager, can arrange either of the above.

We would like to wish our Chammy and Matchplay contenders the best of luck. Please remember that these Round 2 games have to be played by the end of the month or your risk being knocked out by a coin toss!

We would also like to remind our readers to please repair divots and pitch marks on the course, especially now that it has rained and the ground is softer than usual. Below is a diagram showing the correct method of repairing pitch marks. Can you imagine how quickly the course would recover if we all have to repair our own, and one other, divot or pitch mark?

Junior Golf

Our younger golfers continue to excel in the golfing world, flying our Clovelly flag high!

Well done to Evan Marais who represented WP in a Triangular event against Boland and Southern Cape, in Robertson. His u/13 team achieved second place and the u/15, u/17 and u/19 teams all won. Evan held his own well against a very strong u/13 field with 4 wins and 6 losses (2 were 1 downs).

The final accumulated scores were:
Western Province 134
Boland 118.5
Southern Cape 107.5

Adam Richardson achieved 4th place in a SA Kids Golf event at Paarl Golf Club. We’re looking forward to seeing his name more often! Well done guys.

Of course, we must mention Isabella van Rooyen who took part in the SA Ladies Open at Westlake Golf Club last week. She finished 56 out of 114 players with a score of +23 over four rounds. The conditions were challenging and she was playing with the best of the best. Well done, Isabella!

When it comes to junior golf, we have really missed our monthly Pitch n Putt competitions down at the Range. We haven’t had one for over a year! These playful competitions, sponsored by Clear Design and run by Coach Dave, are always heaps of fun and the perfect way to get our younger players’ confidence up. We are super excited to have our first post-pandemic Pitch n Putt next Saturday, 29th May! Please bring your kids. Non-golfers can play cricket, soccer or jump on the jumping castle.

Penny Price, our environmental scientist and alien vegetation clearing expert, has another lovely contribution to our newsletter, in the form of a Rose’s rain frog, or Breviceps rosei spp rosei.

This little frog is very unusual – it cannot swim and does not even live in or close to water bodies.  It lives in subterranean nests in sandy soil around plant roots where it makes a little cocoon-type capsule to keep it from dehydrating over the hot summer months.  It lays eggs and the young tadpoles develop inside the eggs, hatching as fully formed little frogs! The frogs surface during heavy rains when you can hear them calling each other.  It is endemic to the sandveld of the south-western coastal belt in South Africa, a range of about 20,000 square kilometers.  A very special find.”

We think it’s adorable! Thanks, Penny.

We were so pleased to receive some of Amber and Ezra’s wedding photos. Our business may be golf, but we ALL love a Clovelly wedding! Especially when it is over and everyone is left with happy memories. It also gives our Chef Craig an opportunity to show off his skills in the kitchen. This couple had beef fillet steak bearnaise with red wine jus, Hasselback potato and veg. It looks divine!

The above picture is of Ocean Course’s fairway operators in full swing before the start of the PGA Championship in Kiawah Island, USA. For a little perspective, we only have two fairway machines, driven by Big Eric and Pascal, for the whole course. A testament to their efficiency!

This is the second golf major of an unprecedented six major season due to postponed events from last year. Good luck to the players!

Bruni Bensch, modelling the latest in bad-weather golfing fashion, also shows us commitment to the game! Well done, Bruni!

Thanks to Pat Quill for this lovely image of the clouds over the Range. The sunset that evening was spectacular!

That is all from us. Please remember that bookings for Saturday and Wednesday competitions (telephonic, online or in-person) are only opening at 07:15 from tomorrow until the end of August. Also, if you would like to pop in tomorrow for the opening of MichellGolf’s indoor training facility, that would be great!
