What’s the Ruckus about our Peacocks?
Some of you may have seen this petition on social media to Save the Peacocks of Clovelly or read some of the articles written about the situation and we thought we would address the issue ourselves so that you are all in the loop.
A few weeks ago we received a polite complaint regarding the noise our peacocks make and the fact that some of them roam into the residents’ gardens. We have taken their complaint seriously as we have always tried our best to have a good relationship with our neighbours, to the extent of assisting the Neighbourhood Watch with their security requirements and providing accessible spring water to the residents in the lead up to ‘Day Zero’.
A representative of Beauty Without Cruelty learned of our situation and started the petition under the impression that we were going to cull our peacocks. We would just like to say that we have no intention of killing our peacocks. We are meeting with the residents at the end of this month and we will let you know the result of our discussions. We are sure that there will be a peaceful outcome that will please everyone.

Chammy and Matchplay Champions of 2019!
After months of battling it out on the course through rain and sunshine, our Chammy and Single Matchplay Champions of 2019 have emerged!
Well done to Jan Badenhorst who beat off the likes of Willie Mentoor, John Sillifant and Anton Bruwer to win the Gus Ackerman Trophy from Steven Dunn.
Wizz Good and Shyam Makanjee, 2017’s Chammy Champs, found themselves playing against Ian Hutchison and David van Eyk. Ian, a veteran in this competition, won the title in both 1996 and 1999 with his late playing partner, Pieter Binkhorst. Perhaps this gave him the leading edge because Ian and Dave beat Wizz and Shyam, 3/2.
With Wizz and Shyam dominating the past few years’ Chammy tournaments, there was talk of changing the title to the ‘Shyammy Cup’. Luckily, Dave and Ian’s win means that the Chammy Cup will stay as it is!
Staff Champs 2019
On Monday we held our much-anticipated 2019 Staff Champs. The day was perfect and management, caddies, clubhouse, course and golf staff all found themselves jumbled together. It is such a great opportunity to build staff relationships and have fun as a team!
In the C Division, Caddie, Nel Cetwayo, beat his cousin, Course Staff Member, Albert Cetwayo, to claim top spot with 18 points. Caddie, Ilinn Philander, beat Course Staff Member, Zwelethu Staffa, with 81/71 to 86/72 to win B Division. Caddie, David Mampies, beat Golf Ops Starter, Solly Daniels, with 76/72 to 78/72 to win top spot for the day and defend his title from 2018. Clearly, our caddies know what they’re doing!
After golf, we had pizza and a lucky draw where Eric Mamve, Daniel Joseph and Nono Ndlondloyi won Pick n Pay vouchers. Tafadzwa Nyamwanza received a voucher for ‘Moment of the Day’ when, after completing his first nerve-wracking 18 hole game, he asked for a gin and tonic at the bar! Not quite what GM, Paul Stoner, had in mind when he invited the staff to have a drink.
We encourage all of our staff to learn to play golf, and many of them take us up on our offer. We love seeing their skills and confidence develop and it really pays off when we see people who would never have set foot on a golf course in their lives, not only taking part in the staff champs but doing very well! Hopefully, next year our female staff will put in a fourball!
Caddie Christmas Drive
Chatting with one of our lovely Swallow Members, Colin Wood, he remarked how impressed he had been by our member’s generosity towards Farai and Brian after the Masi Fires where they lost everything and were able to rebuild their lives with the help of member donations and assistance from Clovelly.
Being part of Clovelly, kindness from our members and staff is the norm and we probably don’t acknowledge it enough. We believe that Mr. Ackerman set the foundation, treating everyone as equally valuable and being the first to dig into his pockets to help. Members like Bobby Perel from Peresoft, the players of the Dirty Dozen, and so many more-too many to mention, build the walls and spread the love.
The comments and stories on Facebook Group, I’m Staying, have us inclined to think that such goodness is a South African quality, but our Swallow members, who are equally quick to help and are so warm, have proven that goodness comes from all over the world! What a great world to live in.
With this in mind, we are doing another Christmas Drive for our caddies. We will begin the donations by pledging R 300 to every caddie. If you are interested in donating towards this worthy cause you can drop off any cash donations at the Bookings Office or make an EFT payment to Clovelly’s bank account with “Caddie Donation” as your reference. We are asking specifically for monetary donations as we can divide the amount easily between caddies and they can use the money to buy items that they really want or need. Any amount, no matter how big or small, will go a long way in improving our caddies’ festive season. Thank you!
Geoff Taylor and Steven Dunn, coming third and fourth in Wednesday’s Betterball Stableford competition sponsored by Barons Tokai, received some pretty neat prizes.
Scarification on the 10th has been completed. After an application of fertilizer, we expect the fairway to be fully recovered and better than ever in about two weeks’ time.
