We hope that all of you have enjoyed the last two weeks. We have had the most amazing weather; a perfect backdrop for our lovely birdlife and the whales that have been frequenting the bay! If you haven’t seen them yet you need to come and spend more time on our side of the mountain. They have been magnificent.
Congratulations to Dave Sharp, who had a hole-in-one on Hole 6 Friday, 2nd August! Hole-in-ones always seem to come in batches, so we’re waiting for lucky number three! A fabulous notch in your belt, well done!
Sadly, we have received news of the loss of another one of our members, Dr. Arthur Huber. Dr. Huber, a general practitioner in Mitchell’s Plain, was a member of Clovelly for 31 years. We send our condolences to his family and hope that they find peace in this sad time.
Bracyn Valayadum; Our own President’s Award Gold Achiever
We are proud to announce that our very own RAGA student, Bracyn Valayadum, has achieved gold standard for the President’s Award https://presidentsaward.co.za/. Bracyn is not only the first RAGA student to achieve this high standard, but also the first student of Fish Hoek High School.
Achieving gold for the President’s Award entails seventy-two hours of community service, improvement in a skill and a sport over twelve months, an adventurous journey and a residential project. Bracyn’s chosen skill was computer programming and his sport, no surprises here, was golf. His adventurous journey, taking place over four days in Betty’s Bay, was an 80-kilometer hike, and his residential project was working in an underprivileged community in Franschoek for five days. Bracyn has been helping his family serve the community since he was a toddler, so when it came to community service, Bracyn easily ticked the boxes by continuing to help rehabilitate homeless people through his Church. After receiving a certificate signed by the Duke of Edinburgh and President Cyril Ramaphosa, he is now in line to be part of the South African Gold Award Holder’s Association, which will see him continue his active involvement.
Join us for Quiz Night!
We are hosting another fun quiz night. This time the questions are tailored for the Average-Joe, in order to make it a more relaxed, sociable evening. We hope that you can join us!
Our First and Second Challenge sides started their 2019 campaigns on the 3rd of August. Both sides took to the fairways energized, despite our First Challenge side having a tough start ahead of them, being drawn against a strong Westlake side. However, a strong performance away secured us 3 points with wins from Tim Henshall, Dean Sossen and Matthew Cooper, who was up against cricketing legend Jacque Kallis! Home wins from Steven Dunn, Jon Bernard, and our very own WP player, Daniel Joseph, saw us walk away 6 – 2 winners.
Our Second Challenge also enjoyed a positive start, although our team away did all the heavy lifting, securing all 4 points with wins from father-son duo Jan and Jan Stals van Rooyen (who recorded an impressive 7 & 6 win), Tyrone Leach and Jeremy Kilian. At home, David Mampies and Rhett Halkett secured wins to secure another 6 – 2 win for our league sides!
The second fixtures were against Milnerton, another toughy, and Kuils River.
The First Challenge side was boosted by the return of David Thompson, another one of our WP players. This time, however, Matthew Cooper was unavailable for selection as was competing in an important national ranking event in the Southern Cape. Unfortunately, due to the high number of unavailability’s, the van Rooyen duo was drafted into our First Challenge side, and the Second Challenge fixture was conceded.
Despite this, consolidating our players into the First Challenge side paid off and we walked away 6 – 2 victors once again! The wins came from all four players at home, namely Jan and Jan Stals van Rooyen, Jon Bernard and Daniel Joseph, with away wins from David Thompson and Steven Dunn. What a great start and long may the momentum continue!
This game saw a Clovelly team of Erl Hvidsten, Ian McPherson (our Club Captain), Theo van Zyl and James Wight against Belville. They secured another positive start for Clovelly with a 2 – 0 win over Belville. This same team took on Parow next and continuing their winning streak, they secured another 2 – 0 victory!
We wish them all of the best for their next fixture against Rondebosch. Well done, Clovelly!
New in the Bar!
We have some, new exciting offers from our friendly Bar Manager, Sebastian Brown; Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla and Savanna Lemon. Savanna Lemon is another alcohol-free drink, which has proven a hit with our members. Although, this time, it comes in the form of a cider. Tanqueray Sevilla is infused with bittersweet oranges and orange blossom and is the perfect drink to enter spring with!
How awesome is this old throwback? Pictured above are Craig Small, Rob Pilkington, Brett Herselman, Stephen Thomas, Duncan Johansen, Ian McPherson, John Spyker, and Antonio Bruni. Taken many moons ago, the majority of these members have been on the Committee or Governing Body.

Congratulations to Olly Malyon who came first place in his division in the SA Kids Golf Tournament at Atlantic Beach. Well done, Olly, one of the first of many wins for you!
We have had so many accomplishments by Clovelly members this year! Recently Lynn Berrisford and Ronel Smoulders were in the winning team at the WP Seniors. Lynn also won B Division in the Champion of Champions Tournament held at Bellville on 11th August. Clovelly had many reasons to be proud during this tournament, with Matt Cooper and Isabella van Rooyen coming second in the A Divisions, Cameron Mackintosh coming second in the B Division and Rich Hodge coming sixth in the C Division.
Isabella has also been selected for WP Women’s Inter-provincial Tournament B Team. Well done, everyone, and thank you for your commitment!
With Committee Members, Janeen Alford and Birdie Jenkinson, are the winners of the Ladies Progressive Alliance Competition, with 77 points, Jess Green, Clare Williams, Dawn English and Jane Hall (not pictured).
The Fine&Country sponsored Senior’s Monday Competition was finally held, two weeks late on the 12th August, after rain prevented play on the usual last Monday of the month. The winners, with an excellent 85 points, were Fred Phillips, Selwyn Lange, David James (missing in the picture) and Georgie Bowes. Padraic Mcmahon has a particularly successful day, shooting a 75 off of a 10 handicap, winning best gross and net.
