It’s Friday – and a great Friday at that! We’re heading into a long weekend and today is the date of our first ‘Clovelly’ Friday Night menu. The return of our Lucky Draw, sponsored by Lyall Morgan and Associates, is long overdue and we are all looking forward to an excellent evening with Gordon Rocker coming along to get Clovelly rocking!
On Sunday we celebrate Human Rights Day, which is close to our hearts and the Clovelly ethos. It is a great moment to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy today and the people who fought for them. We wish our readers a safe and happy long weekend. We hope you are able to spend some quality time with your loved ones, and if that happens to take place on the golf course, so be it.
We would like to give a warm welcome to the following new members of Clovelly Country Club; Freddy Biani, Eugene Engela, Craig Engledow, Lorraine Ingram, Brent Neethling, Michael Parker, John Zylstra, Reinier van den Bergh, Dane Ferrett, Maxwell Newbury, and Annabel Rattray. Thank you for joining us! We hope you make many special memories at this beautiful club.
Before we get into our newsletter, we would like to congratulate Andre van Zyl on his hole-in-one on the 16th Hole on Wednesday, 3rd March. For all our new members: routinely, hole-in-ones happen in threes (at least), so now is the time to be on the course if a hole-in-one is one of your golf goals!
We would also like to congratulate Jonathan Bernard who has been selected to represent WP in the Senior Interprovincial Tournament taking place at Stellenbosch Golf Club from 19 – 23 April 2021. Good luck, Jonathan!
Another congratulation is in order for Isabella van Rooyen who won the KZN Amateur Matchplay Tournament against the number 1 amateur in the country, Caitlyn McNab. Fantastic game, Isabella! Well done!
Global Golf’s Merger with The Pro Shop
Some of you may have heard the news of Global Golf’s merger with The Pro Shop and you may even have noticed that ‘The Pro Shop’ branding has gone up in our pro shop. We have received an informative communication from Global and would like to share it with you.
It is with much excitement that we, Global Golf, have the pleasure of announcing that The Pro Shop has become a partner in all Global Golf’s “on-course” shops across South Africa.
The partnership gives our members and guests several fantastic benefits including improved staff training and more competitive pricing. Without losing the roots of what made our on-course business so successful, the partnership with The Pro Shop will allow us to provide better service, the best advice, and more competitive prices going forward.
With the continued support of golf club professionals from the Professional Golf Association of South Africa, we will endeavor each and every day to perfect our service and provide all members with the most comprehensive retail offering in the on-course environment.
This partnership also allows our store to participate in all the famous and Major sales held throughout the year by The Pro Shop, giving you access to the hottest deals in golf from your club’s shop.
The Pro Shop’s long-established partnerships with eBucks, Multiply & Investec will now mean that you can redeem rewards from these programs at Global Golf on-course shops, with the additional advantage of The Pro Shop’s gift cards and MyGolfLife rewards being accepted as payment in-store too. To find out more about MyGolfLife rewards, visit mygolflife.co.za.
From our new team at Global Golf Retail, we wish you a wonderful 2021 filled with great golf, low scores, and a few exciting purchases to improve your game.
The pro shop staff that we all know and love will be staying with us and our members will continue to receive their member’s discount. It is only getting better from here! We wish Global Golf and The Pro Shop all the best.
In the busyness of summer – even without our tourists – not much outside of our usual routine has been going on. The greens are in good condition and we have had some of our course staff focusing on the finer details of the course such as the edgings around the tree bowls, sprinklers and distance markers. They have also been trimming some of the trees and bushes. The winter grass areas on the 2nd fairway have been sodded and we’ll be hollow tining and fertilizing certain other areas to promote one last boost of Kikuyu growth before soil temperatures drop.
The GolfRSA Rating Team visited us this past Tuesday to re-rate the golf course and adjust the course ratings. We will wait to hear whether the stroking will be altered at all.
We are happy to share that Andy is available once again to clean and polish your shoes after your round of golf. You can leave them on the counter outside of the locker room and if he is free you will return to shoes that look brand new! Tips are appreciated.
Other than that, all of our news is focused on the future. As winter draws nearer golf days and tournaments will ramp up. Scroll down to our forthcoming events for posters on the second of our Sundowner Series taking place next Friday (bookings are still available!) and our CLOVELLY FESTIVAL ‘WEEKEND’! Although we have decided to skip our Clovelly Festival Week due to complications arising from COVID, we couldn’t not do anything at all. So we are going ahead with Clearwater Day and a firm favorite…our Greenkeeper’s Revenge! Keep an eye out for further communication in the near future.
Please remember that Hollow Tining will take place on the 12th and 13th of next month. There is a poster below for this too and our Golf Director, Hanko, has kindly arranged reciprocity with a number of golf clubs. This is a great moment to experience other golf courses at a reduced rate while we work hard to ensure the health and playability of our own.
Another project that kept our course staff busy was the cleaning of our dams. This happened in the middle of a wet cold front. We do this just before winter every year to keep a hand on sediment and check that the lining of the dam is intact. We still need to clear the inlet pipe from the middle dam on the 14th hole to promote a healthy and free flow of water through our storage system. This will require a digger loader, and will ideally be carried out before the rainy season sets in.
We are incredibly proud of our own Jessica Green, who continues to represent Clovelly, and South Africa, like an absolute star! She is just won the Hillcats Classic Tournament in Oklahoma and was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association player of the week! You couldn’t meet a sweeter, more committed young golfer. You rock, Jess!
This is such a great photo of our happy Joshua. We are lucky to have the course staff that we do – they make up a team of joyful, interesting characters. Please take a moment to introduce yourself and ask them a question or two when you bump into them.
We hope that you all keep well and have a very happy week ahead. We look forward to seeing you on the course! For our Swallows abroad, we hope that the signs of spring are starting to appear and you are all well. We miss you!
