Does anyone else feel like life seems almost ‘normal’ at the moment? Our kids are back at school, life at the golf club is very much what it used to be, with busy tee sheets, league golf, and our AGMs keeping us busy. Venue requests for weddings are pouring in and our weekends are filled with trips to the beach (for some in the hope of spotting the orca whale that has been swimming around the bay) and eating out at restaurants. It is easy to forget that we are in the middle of a pandemic, but fortunately, we’re relatively safe by default as wearing masks, social distancing, and sanitizing has become second-nature to us.
We continue to welcome new members to Clovelly, some of them returning past members, so we must be doing something right! On a serious note, we’re so grateful that they have chosen our beautiful club as their second home and that we have such a warm, friendly membership base for them to join. Here is a happy welcome to Paul Heather, Vincent and Matthew Muir, Andrew Torr, Sean Mercer, Katia and Robert Shaff, Thurlo Jansen, Tarquin Loubsher, Zaakariyah Vardien, Hilton Coverly, Jorge Ferreira, Jarrett Kevin, Nicholas Efstathiou, Gerna and Chad Sivewright, Jamie Muller, and Divan De Koning.
As these past two weeks have been mostly great ones, we thought we would start with some congratulations. We are particularly proud of our juniors at the moment, specifically Evan Marais, Olly Malyon, and Hayden Blanckensee who have all been selected for the WP U13 team! We must point out that when Evan, who is only 10, and Olly, who just turned 11, started playing golf they each shared the goal of being selected for WP Golf and it is a credit to their hard work and dedication that they achieved that goal, and at such a young age! We wish them the best of luck as they represent Clovelly.
All the juniors mentioned here, with the exception of Hayden, have been coached by MichellGolf – a testament to their skills and enthusiasm towards the next generation of golfers.
We would also like to congratulate June Harrison, who has just won the Wendy Warrington Trophy for the third time since Wendy donated the trophy in 2013. Pat Quill quickly captured this lovely image on the right of Wendy with the trophy on the day of the competition, despite the lack of prize-giving.
Lastly, a big congratulations to Vic Packwood for his hole-in-one of the 6th this past Monday, 15th February! We always love to hear of our members achieving this golf goal!
We have more good news, but we will let our Chairman announce it in his Chairman’s report at tomorrow’s Club AGM. It is heart-warming, exciting, and makes us super proud to be part of this club! Hopefully, you will be able to join us via Zoom.
Below are the details for tomorrow’s Men’s Golf and Main Club AGM. Although our Golf AGM starts at 18:15 and our Club AGM starts at 19:15, we will use the same meeting link for both and will let the meeting run from 18:00 until the end of the Club AGM so that attendees don’t have to leave one meeting to enter another.

We had great success holding our Ladies AGM over Zoom this past Tuesday and it was very special to see some of our Swallows whom we haven’t seen in almost a year! We are so grateful for technology, helping us break barriers and connect despite the distance or obstacles between us!
We would just like to take a moment to thank Jacky White (pictured above with Club Captain, Greg Daly), who hung up her boots on Tuesday after being a Committee Member for 10 years and Ladies Captain since 2018. It was an emotional moment, with none of us realizing the extent of the bonds we created as we worked together for the good of Clovelly until we were met with the end of an era. Jacky, you are one in a million and will always be part of our Clovelly Family! See you on the fairways!
We will introduce our new committees in our next newsletter, but here is a quick note to congratulate Janeen Alford on her nomination as Ladies Captain. We are looking forward to working with you, Janeen!
Life comes with its good and its bad, and we are so sad to announce the passing of another three members of our Clovelly Senior Community in the last two weeks. We lost George Scagell (below, left), Sham Young, and Derek Pereira MBE (below right).
Anyone who knew either of these gentlemen would agree that they personified Clovelly’s values of kindness, loyalty, and warmth. Although George and Derek, who was awarded an MBE for his work for underprivileged children with the “Reach for a Dream” campaign, have not been present at Clovelly for a number of years due to ill health, we remember them fondly.
Sham, who has been a member for 40 years, still played golf once or twice a week up until the end of last year and perhaps it is his presence that we will miss the most. We send our love to their families and loved ones. May their souls rest in peace.
We say goodbye to Iglin
Other sad news for Clovelly Country Club is that Iglin Grobbelaar, our Pro Shop Manager, will be leaving us at the end of the month to pursue new adventures. Over Iglin’s five years at Clovelly, he made many friendships and it is difficult to imagine the club without him. We wish him the best and know that there are good times ahead! We look forward to catching up when he pops by. If you want to keep up with him please follow him on Facebook or Instagram. He assures us that he will be more active on both profiles!
Below is a message from Iglin.
“Clovelly has been my home away from home for the past 5 years. Falling in love with the place and the people that make it all work was easy, and I will treasure the memories, friends, and experiences forever.
I wish to thank the Ackerman Family for their devotion to Clovelly and its’ people. Without you, none of this would be possible. To the members and staff of Clovelly, I thank you for the friendships I have made. I for one, am proud to can say that I was employed at one of the best.
You will most definitely see me on the beautiful fairways, and hopefully for a refreshment or two in the bar from time to time.
Long may Clovelly reign as one of the greats in SA!
Finishing off with some pictures of life at Clovelly…
RAGA Alumni Aidan Valayadum and Caitlin Abrahams decided to have a round of golf before the start of their academic year. Aidan is doing his final year in Political Science and Criminology at the University of Free State and Caitlin her final year of Bachelor of Arts at the University of Western Cape. It is so rewarding to see our RAGA Alumni on the course and we wish them everything of the very best for their studies.
SNAKES ALIVE! Another boomslang was spotted in the grass before quickly making its way up a tree and poor Lionel Gordon, before teeing off the 4th, sat on the tree stump bench on the left of the tee box and stood to realize with some horror that there was a snake curled up inside it. We can’t quite make out what type of snake it was but we appreciate the story, which is both amusing and alarming at the same time. Africa in all her glory!
An old photo, but one we wanted to share nonetheless, is of some of our staff collecting items donated after the Masi Fire. It still warms our hearts when we consider how we all banded together to raise R25 000 per each of the six staff members to rebuild their lives!
For interest’s sake, our Monday Seniors raised and donated a total of R83,000 in their last financial year. Some of the charities that benefitted were The Red Cross Children’s Hospital, False Bay Hospital, and The Net. The staff of Clovelly Country Club benefited a great deal too, considering the generosity of our Seniors towards the Lockdown Fund. A big thank you, on behalf of Clovelly Country Club, to the wonderful men that make up this part of Clovelly.
Even General Managers occasionally slice their shot into the woods, as can be seen by the above photo of Paul in front of MichellGolf’s cheeky sign. Perhaps they’ll offer Paul a discount!
The essence of league golf; Craig Small sent in this picture of Mike de Swart and James Dougan from Milnerton, with our own effervescent victor, Wizz Good. All smiles!
Our Golf Manager, Hanko, will be including a league update in our next newsletter.
We would like to introduce you to Spin, one of our seasonal workers. Spin is usually in the mountains clearing alien vegetation, but he occasionally helps out around the course too. Our staff always welcome the opportunity to chat with our members and learn about you, especially our course staff, who are a little more isolated than the rest of us.
We hope that you all have a great week ahead! Keep safe and do enjoy a round of golf on one of these beautiful summer days.
Don’t forget our Clovelly Sundowner Series, in partnership with Under Armour!
This 9-hole evening series will take place on the last Friday of every month for the duration of the year. Entries are open for our first event on Friday, 26th February, starting at 15:00. Thereafter, bookings open up one month in advance, so you’ll be able to book for March’s event on the day of February’s event. There is a competition fee of R100 per person, which includes a delicious pizza to share and a selected drink after golf. ‘Pay as you Play’ members pay a R90 green fee and visitors pay a R180 green fee.
