How are our readers doing this lovely Friday? We have just come through a very ‘entertaining’ week. The pace started ramping up as we began plans for our “Festival Weekend” which consisted of Clearwater Day and our Greenkeeper’s Revenge. We also had to consider a film shoot with a crew of 60 on the 18th Hole on a fully booked Friday, followed by Alan Michell’s wedding and John Spyker’s 70th birthday. Only to dive straight into Hollow Tining, spring cleaning, and two conferences. It is no surprise that our GM, Paul Stoner, has put in leave for the next two weeks. Luckily for us, they look a little calmer.
Please note that the Range will be closed from 14:30 tomorrow, Saturday 17th April, as we have a birthday party starting at 15:00. Really exciting news for us is that upgrades to the Range will be starting this week. We look forward to sharing the results with you and thank you for your patience whilst we work in the area.
We continue to welcome new members to Clovelly and have almost reached the 1500 mark (excluding staff), which must be a first in our history! We would like to give a warm welcome to the following; George Fletcher, Rob Kent, Tim and Benjamin Mitchell, Sven Moeller, Benjamin, Matthew and Jonathan Couves, Courtney Chase, Guy Grove, Alexus Nel, Craig Todd, Andrew Argent and Schalk and Nicolaas Van Der Walt. We wish you many years of happy memories and friendships!
Establishment of our Handicap Committee
In the past year, there have been many changes to the World Handicap System and the way we play competitions and fill out scorecards. As a result of these changes and a tightening up of the rules, we have reported a 37% error rate on competition scorecards handed in over the past few months, leading to regular disqualifications.
Golf RSA has issued a directive to all golf clubs in South Africa that handicap allowances must be applied to all competitions and the next step will be for all golf clubs to establish Handicaps Committees. We’re proud to be ahead of the curve and have established a Handicaps Committee of our own. Please keep an eye out for an email from us early next week where we will introduce the committee members and address training on Playing Handicaps & Allowances and feedback on submitted competition cards.
Please let us know if you do not receive the email as a few email service providers have flagged our emails as spam due to their bulk nature and until we can figure out how to remedy it, we will have to send them to you personally.
Our young golfers, flying the Clovelly flag high!
Our younger golfers have flown the Clovelly flag high again. We would like to congratulate:
– Isabella van Rooyen who has been selected for the 2021 WP Women’s Squad and to represent WPG at the 2021 Women’s 72 Hole Team Championship. Well done, Isabella, and good luck!
– Jan Stals van Rooyen and Evan Marais who have been selected to represent WP Junior Golf in the upcoming triangular between Boland, the Southern Cape and WP at Robertson in early May. Best of luck and well done!
These young golfers have consistently shown tremendous tenacity and discipline and their efforts are paying off. They couldn’t be more deserving. Their coaches, Mike and Alan of MichellGolf, can be very proud!
Looking back at the week in pictures
Watching Eye Love Films in operation was inspiring! With a crew of 60 people, including make-up artists and stylists, they arrived at Clovelly at 5am in order to beat the morning field’s turn at 08:30. Not easy when the sun only rises at 7am and it is blocked by the mountain for a good portion of the morning! Amazingly, with a good lighting crew, they achieved their goals and left to film another two locations. Some of their crew worked over 16 hours – and we thought golf life was tough!
Congratulations, Alan and Lynda, on your beautiful wedding! You both looked very handsome and we’re sure the late Brian Michell was looking down with pride! We wish you a long future filled with love and joy!
It was great to see Steven Dunn honour his heritage by wearing a kilt to Alan’s wedding.
We would like to thank our Clearwater Day sponsors, KWV, Under Armour, Douglas Transport and the many golf clubs who sponsored our prizes. Heineken also came through with some ‘Tiger’ beers which went down well!
The day was a fantastic success and we must give credit to Craig and his team who, after a late night serving meals, prepped platters for Alan’s wedding whilst serving boerie rolls and Hooches from the 10th tee and made lasagne and salads for the golfers after their round. Only to come back on Sunday and do it all over again!
Our Greenkeeper’s Revenge was another success and Brian Dlutu and Hanko Bothma thoroughly enjoyed setting up the course! Our Ladies Committee would like to thank the members who supported them by purchasing raffle tickets over the weekend. Congratulations to Stuart Saggers who won a cooler-box full of wine!
They would also like to invite our readers to attend our next Monthly Mixed competition, which takes place on the first Sunday of every month. The next event, taking place on Sunday, 2nd May is being sponsored by Great White Sport and Surf and bookings are open. New members and visitors are very welcome!
Please contact our Ladies Captain, Janeen, on 083 273 3211 if you would be interested in sponsoring a Monthly Mixed comp. We always appreciate the support!
It was so special to celebrate the 70th birthday of John Spyker this past Sunday. We tried our best to keep it a surprise and it was a tough task, with John repeatedly mentioning how he was having to work on his birthday! In the end, our conniving was worth it. Happy birthday, John! Thank you for all you do for us.
We would like to mention Monashra from Pick n Pay Fish Hoek. She works in the bakery and went above and beyond to ensure John had a delicious cake, taking the time to add little personal touches!
Hollow Tining was undertaken in record time and once again, our “Divot Team” arrived to help fill divots. For those of you who haven’t heard of our Divot Team, the team is made up of a group of senior members who volunteer to repair divots over Hollow Tining, purely out of their love for the course and our Clovelly Family. A huge thank you to Allan Johns, Gwyn Phillips (pictured above right), George Bowes, Adrian Batt (above left), Dave Liebrecht, Mike Lee, Nick Girling, Theo Ferreira, Ian Jarvis, Rodney Yates, Christi Benson, and Bruce Condon. You continue to inspire us and we can only hope that your hard work and efforts will motivate our golfers who do not repair their divots to do better! Come one, guys!
Lastly, a big congratulations to Brendan Jones who achieved a hole-in-one on the 16th on Saturday. Great job!
We would like to thank Shaun Holman and Pat Quill for the photos that they send in! We know we’re not the only ones who appreciate being able to see the course through their eyes and our newsletter definitely wouldn’t be the same without their contributions.
We hope that you all have a wonderful weekend ahead. Please remember that this coming Friday Night’s menu will be accompanied by live music from Chapter Three and the Lucky Draw! The next Friday will see the third Sundowner Series, sponsored by Under Armour.
