Compliments of the season to our wonderful readers! We hope that you have had as good a start to 2022 as we have. Summer is in full swing. The days are long and sweltering and if you are not at work or on the golf course, you’re likely to be one of the hundreds of happy beachgoers enjoying the crystal-clear, cool water. We haven’t minded the constant presence of the southeaster, cooling the sweat on our brows, and just last week a cold front rolled in; a day’s refreshing rain announced by deep, evening thunder. Bliss!

2022 continues to bring new members to Clovelly and we would like to wish the following golfers a warm welcome to our Clovelly Family;

Lee Daniels, Jane Moffat, Marion Telsnig, Matthew Graser, Ricardo Pizzocri, Devin Marshall, Sebastian Smith, Waide Grunow, Garen Niemand, Brandon Williams, Dylan Jones, Nieuwoudt Gresse, Ramon Tavenor and Gary Jacobs.

Please remember, all members, that our Governing Body members play weekly and would love the opportunity to meet you. Please speak to our Golf Manager, Hanko, to arrange a game.

Sadly, we also lost a dear member. Benny Manuel, at the age of 81 and a member of Clovelly’s for just shy of 40 years, passed away last week. Condolence comments flooded in and it was clear that Benny was deeply loved and respected. Our members wrote of his ready smile, his patience and kindness, and of course, his golf skills. We lost a true gentleman with outstanding character. Our hearts are with his family and friends at this sad time. We will all miss him.

My Father’s House Golf Day

Before we get into current news, we want to take a quick look back at the My Father’s House Golf Day which took place in December. The golf day saw 100 players take to the field in support of the My Father’s House ‘Feeding the People’ organization. In their typical generous fashion, most of the field was made up of our lovely members. The aim of the golf day was to raise much-needed funds for the My Father’s House Community Kitchen and in particular, their annual Christmas meal for disadvantaged local individuals. The players were treated to a gorgeous day, tasty activations on the course, and a delicious array of homemade Indian food after golf.

My Father’s House achieved their goal and, in partnership with other various organizations, they were able to prepare and gift 2100 Christmas meals to old aged homes, senior citizens, informal settlements and other disadvantaged and homeless locals! Their reach extended but was not limited to Mitchell’s Plain, Strandfontein, Hout Bay, Lavender Hill, Masiphumelele, Redhill and Ocean View.

My Father’s House would like to thank our members for their support, not only of the golf day but of their organization throughout the last couple of years. Many less-fortunate lives have been touched as a result.

Well done, Pastor Shaddie and the My Father’s House team, for your selfless work. You’re a wonderful inspiration and heroes of the community!

Latest News

At this time of year, we don’t have much to talk about as our attention is focused on day-to-day play and course maintenance in the midst of summer and our high season. It takes a lot of resources to make sure that the course stays in top condition with peak traffic, heat, and salt deposits (this time of year is generally windy). It also takes resources to ensure that the field runs smoothly and our golfers are happy.

We do, however, have some new updates; the most exciting of which is our new car wash, operated by Dents Dunn. The Car Wash offers:

1. an external wash and tyre polish
2. an external wash, tyre polish and mini valet,
3. paintless dent removal, subject to an evaluation and quote

Please pay for your car was in the Pro Shop. Enjoy your sparkling clean vehicles!

We are also excited to share that we have ordered new range mats in our efforts to give our driving range a little TLC. International shipping delays mean that we can only expect the delivery of these mats towards the end of February, but they are on their way! The new mats will be similar to our original square hitting mats, but their softness gives golfers a luxurious, lifelike feel and they have a good lifespan.

Whilst on the subject of the range, we have become aware of golfers removing the yellow range balls from the range and putting green for use on the golf course. This has resulted in a significant drop in our weekly ball count and we ask that our members ensure that the yellow range balls remain at the range. If you notice one of your fellow fourball removing these balls, please advise them of our policy or let Hanko know and he will be happy to share it with them. Thank you for your cooperation!

This evening brings the final game of the 2021 Sundowner Series, sponsored by Under Armour and KWV, after we couldn’t find a free Friday in December that would fit our, our golfers’ and our sponsors’ schedules. After months of awesome prizes, two lucky players will walk away tonight after winning a R 5000 Under Armour makeover each! So far, Mike McElhone and Mike Richards are at the top of the leaderboard.

Tonight also marks the start of the 2022 series, so if you didn’t get the chance to be part of this fun event last year, here is your opportunity!

Lastly, Chef Craig has begun his 2022 frozen meals menus! We’ll publish a new menu every two weeks. Orders for this menu must be in by noon tomorrow, please. Thank you for your support!

A visual representation of the cold front rolling in. Isn’t nature magnificent?

Well done to Justin Manson Kullin, Charmaine Malyon, Caroline Ayers and Phil Mason for winning the last Monthly Mixed comp! Thank you to Rob Anderson for the lovely sponsored wine and our lovely Ladies Captain, Janeen Alford, for organizing everything!

As is common at this time of year, snake sightings happen often. We coexist with our Clovelly critters and we ask that should you run into one of our slithering neighbors, you move away from them slowly and calmly. The hadada ibis above looks less than impressed with the boomslang crossing his path and we know that many of our golfers share the same sentiments. Generally, the snakes want to get as far away from you as possible, but if you feel unsafe for some reason, please alert one of our staff members.

Thank you to Pat Quill for the above pictures, as well as the many others we used in this newsletter!

Rest in peace, Benny.

May you all feel joyful and content where you are this week. You’re always welcome at Clovelly, with us!

Before we go, our friendly Pro Shop staff will be selling raffle tickets for the above. All funds raised go towards uplifting the SA Club industry through ongoing, quality education and opportunities for previously disadvantaged employees, facilitated by the Club Management Association of South Africa.

Your support would be amazing! Each of the above raffle items cost R50 per ticket or R200 for all 5. A full list of the prizes can be viewed here.
