Have you all enjoyed this month so far? We have had wonderfully warm weather and full fields, which have done a great job of keeping us busy. We’re buzzing with the news that all 19 RAGA matriculants passed, with 12 bachelor passes and 14 distinctions spread between them! A huge congratulations to Bracyn Valayadum and Vanessa Mutara who achieved three distinctions each and well done to the staff of RAGA for their leadership!
We have had a couple of exciting developments recently, including the finalization of our new wine list, the confirmation of our Clovelly Car Wash, and the start of preparation for our Festival Week. This year we’re going with a tropical island-theme and we are looking forward to our new Golf Manager, Hanko’s, input into his first Clovelly Festival.
New Wine List
We are looking forward to today’s launch of our new wine list, voted for by the members who attended our ‘Walk through the Wine Route’ wine tasting at Clovelly. We were surprised to see how popular the white wines were, with seven new whites voted in, compared to only four reds.
So, without further ado, new to our wine list in the white wine selection are;
Secateurs Chenin Blanc
Doran Vineyards Arya
De Krans Chardonnay Wild Ferment
Bellingham Pear Tree Chenin Blanc
Franschoek Cellar Sauvignon Blanc
Klein Sering Semillon Sauvignon Blanc
Laborie Sauvignon Blanc
Joining our list of rose wines are;
Bon Courage Lady of the House Pinotage
Bellingham Berry Bush
Finally, new to our red selection are;
Roodeberg Classic Red Blend
Franschoek Cellar Merlot
Louis 57 Merlot
Louis Fifty Seven Red (Shiraz/Cab Blend)
Please remember that we also have a selection of non-alcoholic drinks; Castle Free, Heineken O, Erdinger Vice Zero, Becks Blue, Savanna Lemon and Van Loveren Red and White Low-Alcoholic Wines.
Jan Stals is at it again…
We have received a wonderful article on Jan Stals’ achievement at the Bridge Fund Manager’s WP Junior Series at King David Mowbray last Friday, sent in by Doug Carew of Splash PR and Media Consultants. Thanks, Doug!
The stakes were high when Jan lined up against Matthew Lotz of Atlantic Beach and Bobbi Brown of Steenberg, as the regional final, to be played in April 2020, offers the opportunity to win an all-expenses-paid trip to the North and South Junior Championship at Pinehurst, North Carolina. Pinehurst has hosted three US Opens, the PGA Championships and the Ryder Cup.
The trio of talented young golfers faced a playoff after finishing a shot behind tournament winner Travis Procter, who had already qualified for the regional final by winning a #BridgeJuniorSeries title at Boschenmeer, Paarl in September last year.
“Winning the playoff to book a spot in the regional final is the next best thing to winning the tournament,” said Jan, an ambitious 16-year-old who is homeschooled and practices his golf for five hours a day under the watchful eye of coach Mike Michell.
He came close to winning his first #BridgeJuniorSeries title on his home course Clovelly in September 2019, an event won by Junior Presidents Cup player Jordan Duminy. “That helped a lot, knowing I could compete against the best players in big events,” said Jan.
His sisters Isabella (16) and little Sofia (9) also entered the #BridgeJuniorSeries tournament at King David Mowbray, with Isabella finishing tied for 8th after a round of 73 which included a superb birdie on the challenging 18th hole.
“Jan showed tremendous grit in the playoff so we are delighted that he will join Travis at the regional final,” said Paul Stewart, Chief Executive at Bridge Fund Managers.
The #BridgeJuniorSeries launched in 2017, is managed by the SA Golf Development Board and endorsed by GolfRSA. Open to boys and girls in the U13 and U19 divisions, it is played across 18 tournaments hosted by leading courses countrywide.
Well done to Jan Stals, Isabella and Sophia van Rooyen, as well as Isabella Williams, for your efforts last week! We’re so proud of you all.
The Clovelly Car Wash
After wanting to open a car wash at Clovelly for a few years now, and being unable to due to a lack of water and other reasons, we are finally able to put our plans in action!
On Monday, 27 January Bennie Frans will be transferred to the lower car park, adjacent to the Range, in order to facilitate the washing of our member and visitor’s cars. We have installed a water management system that uses treated borehole water to safely wash cars. This includes a plumbing system to ensure that the dirty water goes into the sewer system and not the stormwater drains.
We would love for you to come and try the car wash out! You can purchase a ‘wash’ at the Pro Shop; just leave your keys at the counter and Bennie will do the rest. A simple exterior pre-wash, wash and dry will cost R 90 and a pre-wash, wash, dry and vacuum will cost R 120. Similar to our cart packages, you can purchase a package of 10 car washes, scoring a 10% discount.
Hurry! Our first 50 clients will be entered into a draw to win 5 free car washes. Please ensure that you write your name on the back of your slip and drop it into the box in the Pro Shop to be entered into the draw.
Please accept our apologies. Twice we recorded that Lynn Berrisford won the B Division of the WP Champion of Champions last year when credit should have gone to Joan Mauchline. Sorry to both Lynn and Joan, and well done, Joan!

Marie van Blerk wrote in to thank us for a “wonderful New Year’s Eve event which was so enjoyable. Carl’s food was delicious, the bar service was great and all the extra guys picking up glasses, so friendly and polite. Well, as soon as the first tune was played, the reaction to the band had everyone boogie the night away.”
That says it all. Thanks, Marie!
Thank you to Rhoderic Lourens of Rhoderic Lourens Photography for some of the above photos. Our talented GM, Paul Stoner, took the rest.
Congratulations to Padraic and Trish McMahon and Suzy and Ray Clements; winners on this month’s Monthly Mixed Competition. Sponsored by Rose of Robin Hood Interiors.
