It is hard to believe that we are almost halfway through February -the month of love- and that Valentine’s Day is around the corner! For those of us who are single or divorced, we begin this newsletter with a little laugh.

Richard had been standing over his tee shot for what seemed an eternity; looking up, looking down, measuring the distance, figuring the wind direction and speed. He was driving his partner nuts.

Finally, his exasperated partner says, “What’s taking so long? Hit the blasted ball!”

Richard replied, “My wife is up there watching me from the clubhouse. I’ve got to make this the perfect shot!”

“Forget it, man. You don’t stand a chance in hell of hitting her from here!”

For the rest of us die-hard romantics, we have a tee-rrific “two for one” golf special on late 9 holes on Friday for all couples and we will have Valentine’s specials on selected drinks and meals on Friday evening too. We hope that you will be able to join us to celebrate this day with your special person.

Please note that we are holding our Mens’ and Club AGMs next Saturday, 22nd February. We held our Ladies’ yesterday evening. It was a record nineteen-minute meeting which is testament to the great job that our Ladies’ Captain, Jacky White, is doing! Thank you, Jacky, and the rest of the Ladies’ Committee, of which Lynn Berrisford stepped down from in the meeting. We so appreciate their service over the last two years; thank you.

Please note that the Driving Range will be closing at 15:00 this Saturday and Sunday as we have private functions on. Thank you for your support!

RIP, Nigel Read

Unfortunately, we have to report another sad loss for our Senior Golfers’ Community. Sadly, Nigel Read passed away last week after a drop in health over the last two years. Nigel was a true gentleman and we will all miss him.

We offer our sincere condolences to Nigel’s wife, Barbara, and the rest of his family and friends.

Captain’s Day

This past weekend we hosted a favorite event on our calendar, our annual Captain’s Day. This day unofficially started on Wednesday, as Jonathan Ackerman, our current Vice-Chairman, would be unable to play on Saturday. So a beautiful Wednesday afternoon saw Ian McPherson, our current Captain, teamed up with Stephen Thomas, our current Chairman, bravely challenge our upcoming Captain and Chairman, Greg Daly and Jonathan Ackerman.

What started in excitement, ended in defeat for Ian and Stephen, and Ian was desperate to recuperate his losses when Saturday dawned. Together with 57 other players, who either chose their team or had a side picked for them, Ian and Greg took to the course.
Every pair’s betterball score was contributed towards their team and despite a valiant effort from the Vice-Captain’s team, the Captain’s team managed to secure a marginal victory, but a victory none-the-less, of 611 to 591, allowing Ian to walk away with his head held high.
Thank you to Carl’s Catering for the delicious lamb spit and to Sebastian, KWV, Stellenbrau and Laborie for their wonderful drink offerings.

Thank you to Hanko, our Golf Manager, for his excellent photos of the day. A list of the winners is in the results section below. A special thank you to Ian for his leadership and commitment over the last two years. We have enjoyed every minute!

League Update

Saturday saw our Mid-Am League Team take on Erinvale for Round 2 of the season. After a tough first outing against Somerset West the previous week, our Mid-Am team needed a good result to compete in the remainder of the season and, boy, did they deliver! Our ‘home’ team, made up of Jan van Rooyen, Steven Dunn, Matt Mills (pictured right) and Gareth Wobbee secured 4 points. The addition of another point from our ‘away’ team saw us win the match 5-3! Well done on a hard-fought battle and good luck for your next game!

Our Bronze 1 & 2 ladies’ league teams have also had a successful week! Bronze 1 took on Royal Cape and won 2-1, seeing Clovelly sit at the top of the log for that section, and Bronze 2 had similar results against King David Mowbray. What a way to start the season!

Unfortunately, Westlake emerged the victors against our Bronze 3 and Silver league teams. We’re confident that our ladies are easing into the season gently and will begin their domination soon!

Thank you to all of our lovely ladies for your time and commitment, and the best of luck to you for your next games.

Whilst on the subject of our Ladies’ commitment, we would like to thank all of our ladies who have partaken in WP competitions over the year. You always fly our Clovelly flag high. Well done to Lynn Berrisford who recently won 5th place in the WP Silver and Bronze Cups at Bellville. Lynn had a wonderful score of 47 on the back nine, so a well-deserved placing!
