“This is a wonderful day. I’ve never seen this one before.” – Maya Angelou
We have had two great weeks since our last newsletter, in spite of a bit of weather that was anything but golf-friendly. Luckily, in between a few good rain storms and many icy cold South Easters, we had a couple of toasty Berg winds which warmed the Peninsula, and even one or two perfect ‘summer’s’ days. You never know what to expect at this time of year.
An interesting aspect of the South-Easters is the amount of salt that gets blown over from the sea that finds its way onto the golf course. Course Manager, Steven Webber, has just posted an informative video that has him tasting leaves on the course. Head over to our Facebook page to watch it.
We have one of our most popular golf events coming up; the Clovelly Open Foursomes. Please remember that as an ‘open’ competition, both men and women are able to play, as well as other club members. Also, the handicap restriction does not apply to Clovelly members. So come on through for a day of competitive, but fun, golf, followed by Carl’s famous ribs.
Another event coming up on Saturday, 29th June is the
GolfRSA Cape of Good Hope Wine Series.
The Cape of Good Hope Wine Series is a Betterball Stableford tournament that will enable winning pairs from the Club Qualifiers to contest the Regional Final in a qualifying process that culminates in the National Final on the aspirational Leopard Creek Golf Course in September. Winners of the National Final are invited to play in the Pro-Am of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek.
The entry fee is R50 and should you win, the Regional Finals will occur in the last two weeks of August with the National Final following in September. Please speak to Golf Director, Paul Stoner, for more information. You can let the Bookings Office know that you will be partaking in the competition when you make your Saturday bookings, one week prior (Saturday, 22nd June).
Although most of our Committee Members have been in office since February 2018, we realize that many of you haven’t met these members at the top who devote so much of their time to the club.
So we take great pride in presenting the Committee to you and we hope that if you bump into any of them you can introduce yourself and have a good chat. Thank you to Shaun Holman for making the awkward exercise of getting their photos taken into something quite fun.
Leading the Men’s Committee as Club Captain is Ian McPherson. Level-headed and amiable, Ian is a popular Captain. He is passionate about Clovelly and gets the job done despite his laid-back attitude. Supporting him and pictured clockwise from top left, are Vice-Captain – Greg Daly, Dave Thompson, Rob Pilkington and Jan van Rooyen.
Clockwise from top left: Ladies’ Captain – Jacky White, Vice-Captain – Marnie Wolmarans, Tournament Secretary- Joan Mauchline and League Secretary – Birdie Jenkinson.
Clockwise from top left: Lynn Berrisford, Handicap Secretary – Anne Keable, Carol Reid and Janeen Alford. Lynn, Janeen, and Carol were made Committee Members at the beginning of this year. As a ‘Swallow’ member, Carol represents a particular segment of our members that haven’t been represented before.
This coming Sunday is both Father’s Day and Youth Day, which makes this weekend a very special one! We would like to thank all fathers who make an effort to be present for their children. To lead them, love them and grow them into kind, strong adults. You are part of a bright future and we thank you!
If you would like to celebrate your Dad we have two options for Sunday. There are spaces available for both. See below:
Changes to the Handicap System
Handicap Network Africa would like all golfers to know that there are still two sets of changes to the GolfRSA Handicap Rules coming up (one in October and another in January) which will have us ready and compliant in time for the World Handicap System launch.
Please don’t worry if you don’t understand some or all of it, because HNA will be going into more detail over the next few months and Golf Director, Paul Stoner, is always on hand to ease your concerns. Our members have been so keen to embrace the changes over the last few months and we commend you all for it. Change isn’t always easy but Clovelly seems to be progressive and adaptable and we love it!
Above is an overview of what we can expect. Please let us know if you have any questions.
We are so proud of Joan Mauchline and Lynn Berrisford who recently competed in the Senior Nationals in Parys. Lynn had a brilliant first day, winning with 41 points. Unfortunately, Lynn came down with a terrible cold and despite staying in the competition she couldn’t maintain the same standard of golf. Joan played steadily both days. Well done, ladies! You are both such great ambassadors for Clovelly.
We received a lovely review of a recent dinner at Amor’s. The meals looked fabulous! Remember that Amor has some lovely winter warmers on special and is open during the evenings.
Recent winners of the Fine&Country sponsored Monday Senior’s Competition; Nick Girling, Gary Smith, and David Rennie. They were counted in with 85 points, leaving Peter Killian, Padraic McMahon, Alan Johns, and Dave Martin in second place. Allan Booth was the swinger.
Carl looked happy as he handed over certificates of long service to two of his employees last week. Nobom (left) and Vuyo (right) have both worked for Carl for over five years. You may all know Vuyo as she often takes your orders, but Nobom is the chef responsible for those delicious bacon butties!
We recently hosted the Diner’s Club Golf Day and we were blown away by their beautiful decor. Just stunning!
