This is our last newsletter in March, the last of our summer months, and we are gearing up for Hollow Tyning and the season of rain, icy cold mornings and golf days! Our golf days are starting a little earlier than usual with the SAIMENA (The South African Institute of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects) Golf Day on Friday, 29th March after our regular Friday members’ groups. We’re excited to host them and get into the swing of the season.
Before we get into our newsletter we would like to wish our President, Mr. Raymond Ackerman a belated, but very happy, birthday! Mr. Ackerman turned 88 on Sunday, 10th March and he spoiled the staff, caddies and RAGA students to a delicious Pick n’ Pay doughnut each, as is his birthday tradition. Mr. Ackerman, thank you for being a wonderful example to us all. We wish you a wonderful and successful year ahead, filled with love and happiness!
We would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new members, John Sillifant, Konan Delbrooke-Jones, Dawn Kirkland, Meredy Townsend, Benji Schaffer, Graham Dreyden, Paul Maclons, Derick de Villiers, Gerrard Wigram, Diane Bisset, Hilde Craven, Peter Craven, Sean Delbrooke-Jones and Vince Williams. We hope that you all enjoy Clovelly and have an opportunity to play in either the Seniors’ Monday group, the Ladies’ Tuesday group, or either of the Wednesday or Saturday member’s competitions. You will find our members warm and welcoming, with good humour and fun abound.
Our newsletters attempt to cover all aspects of Clovelly, from our league teams (who all doing very well at the moment), to our course, to events and activations coming up in the future, our kids at the range, and any other thing that might be of interest. In this newsletter, we will be focusing mainly on our Clovelly Golf Festival just passed. This is really because Shaun Holman, member and photographer, has sent us so many great photos and we would like to share them with you!
Before we get to the Festival, however, we would like to introduce you all to our newest staff member, Royer Booysen. Roger has joined our house-keeping team having recently resigned from Carl’s Catering. He has experience with our function set-ups and is well-liked and respected by the rest of our staff. We are well aware that we have gained a great team member and we are excited for his hopefully long and prosperous future at Clovelly. Welcome, Roger!
Clovelly Golf Festival
Our Festival Week kicked off with the Fine&Country sponsored Senior Championship held on Monday, 4th March. Fifty-three players took part, despite the weather threatening the early parts of the afternoon. Thankfully, the day turned out cool and sunny in the end!
The overall senior champion was Alistair Smith, who had an absolutely stunning round, shooting a gross 75 and achieving 33 points from scratch, beating Padraic McMahon by a comfortable 4 points. Alistair is a long-term Swallow who has been coming to Clovelly with his wife, Eithne, for twenty years. Well done, Alistair.
The A division (from 0-18 handicap) was won by Ken Jenkins, who achieved 44 points, and the B division, (from 19-28 handicap) was won by Terry Bensted, with 40 points.
Well done to Mike Tiffin, for his commitment and input into the Seniors section, and thank you to Tony Webb for his sponsorship and great prizes!
On Wednesday, 6th March we held the Lyall Morgan & Associates Open Day. The format for the day was a betterball stableford and Trevor Rogerson and Mike Scott walked away as the winners of the day. KWV came to the party with brandy specials in the bar and a delicious Cruxland gin tasting. Stellenbrau also had a mobile bar on the course and our players were treated to juicy boerewors rolls, cooked by staff member, Owen, and his lovely wife, Syrene. Owen and Syrene were a firm favourite throughout the festival and we are so grateful for their commitment!
On Thursday we had, for the first time in our Festival, the Ladies ‘Red Hat’ Open Day, sponsored by Pick n’ Pay Hypermarket Ottery. Sticking to our ‘Hollywood’ theme, the ladies dressed to impress and the decor was fabulous.
Although it poured with rain, the ladies were in great spirits and the show went on. One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of a cheque for R 5000 to June Watson, on behalf of the Carol Goldsbury Foundation, for their ongoing assistance to junior golfers.
The winners for the day were Dawn English, Bev Roberts, Helen Bowes and Merle Christian, pictured below with PnP Ottery Manager, Waleed Adams.
Friday dawned cold but dry! The competition format for the day was a combined betterball stableford, won by Arnold Berman, Rolf Hediger, Tommy Jonsson and a swinger.
KWV and Stellenbrau continued their generous offerings and Savanna joined us on the course too. As the day progressed it got even better, with a D’Aria wine tasting in the bar to the sound of lovely live music from Liam and Liv.
Clearwater day, the grand finale of our Clovelly Festival, was effortlessly fun and festive from start to end. Our Saturday players, happy and relaxed, always add to the vibe. They were treated to course activations and delicious food from Carl.
After golf, Phillip Powell had the members in the bar in hysterics with his hilarious jokes, some at the expense of his long-suffering wife (all in good humour!) whilst he auctioned off our generously donated golf/hotel packages and other items. Golf Director, Paul, announced the winners of the day – Maynard Matthews, Bennie Frans, Alan Jeniker and Ilinn Philander for the morning and George Bowes, Steve Maguire, Paul Barrett and Mark Barrett for the afternoon. Chapter Three, member Stephen Guild’s new band, had the members dancing soon after Paul announced raffle winners, Brian Evans, Riaan Marais and Neil Fraser. In between the raffle and auction, R 38 550.00 was raised for future projects on the course!
Whilst we were all busy with Clearwater Day, Dave Matthews of MichellGolf held the now annual Mashie Open at the Range.
Many of the kids attending dressed as superheroes, Harry Potter characters, and even James Bond! Face-painter, Alison, was a hit again, even giving a few RAGA students henna tattoos. With soccer, mashie golf, boerewors rolls and our jumping castle, the day was a huge success.
The Clovelly Festival is always an opportunity for the best sides of our staff to shine through, and Shaun Holman captured them all so well! The ladies in the bar were glamorous as usual, as well as Membership Secretary, June. Munashra and Nekisha channelled their inner Marilyn Monroes, whilst Sebastian took his inspiration from the Western movies that he watched whilst growing up. Primrose arrived as Mary Poppins, and Paul showed his tough side as a Roman gladiator! Manager, John Spyker, came as Friar Tuck. Just joking, he was obviously Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. A splitting image!
Of course, our Festival would not be what it is without our wonderful sponsors! Thank you to Lyall Morgan & Associates, Fine and Country False Bay, Pick n Pay, Global Golf, Deck King, Northern Cross Wealth Management, Golf Guys, Srixon/Cleveland, the Mount Nelson Hotel, Derwent Boutique Guest House, Vista Marina Restaurant, Stellenbrau, Camelthorn, KWV, Distri-liq, BOS Ice Tea, PenBev, Carl’s Catering, Amor’s Bistro as well as the golf courses who so kindly donated vouchers. You are all brilliant!
We are not quite ready to take a break yet and we have some great events coming up! We also have a fabulous special on hardware in the Pro Shop.
We look forward to seeing you all in the coming weeks. Stay safe on the roads, enjoy a romantic candle-lit dinner or two when load-shedding presents the opportunity, and when it all gets too much, escape to Clovelly for a round in paradise.
