It seems as though our returning Swallows (yes, already!) have brought the summer with them. How amazing has the weather been over the last week? It is easy to forget that just a few weeks ago it was snowing outside of Cape Town, and bitterly cold!
With no rain forecast in the next few days, we urge you to enjoy every minute. Go to the beach, come to Clovelly…it is just too perfect to be inside!
Well done, Joan!
Starting off with some lovely positive news, we would like to congratulate Joan Mauchline, one of our Ladies’ Committee Members, who won the Western Province Seniors Championship last week, shooting an 80 gross. Well done, Joan!
We have had quite a few Clovelly golfers flying the Clovelly flag recently, and in our next newsletter, we will be talking about some of our younger, high-performance golfers and MichellGolf students. So stay tuned!
The Clovelly Junior Open
It was awesome to see such a youthful presence at our Club last Friday for the annual WP Clovelly Junior Open, sponsored by Bridge Fund Managers. There was a nice full field of nearly 90 players, helped by the fact that it was school holidays. Although the conditions were challenging, the kids were super excited to tackle the course and their parents seemed equally excited at the prospect of a few hours off!
In amongst the field, there were five Clovelly juniors; Jan Stals van Rooyen, Isabella van Rooyen, Olivia Wood, Oliver Malyon and Oran Jolley. It is always great to see a competitive Clovelly contingent and we couldn’t be more proud of the quality and characters of these Clovelly representatives. Usually these kids are at the top of the rankings but unfortunately, this was not their day.
Overall, the young golfers at Clovelly were fearless and the scores reflected their determination. In the A-Division the winning score was a remarkable 5 under par from Ben van Wyk, representing Fancourt. We could all learn a thing or two from these kids! Congratulations to all who played and we look forward to many more positive results from our young golfers in the future.
The Friendship Cup
Another wonderful event that we hosted recently was the now annual Friendship Cup. The Friendship Cup is a competition that sees the Clovelly Ladies Section invite ladies from Westlake, Steenberg, and Simonstown Golf Clubs to join them for the afternoon. This past Tuesday we had sixty-four ladies on the course.
An alliance format is played to try and get a good mix of members together, which worked out wonderfully when we look at our winners pictured below; Michelle Godfrey, Margaret Gravenor, Marilyn Franklin & Caroline Ayers, with Sindi from Mantelli’s.
We would like to thank our main sponsors, Mantelli’s, together with added sponsorship from Lilian Brand, Jacky White, and Marie Pardey.
Robin and Lilian Brand will be hosting another fun quiz night this coming Friday! This quiz is in aid of The Safe House, which is a safe house located in the Western Cape who provides invaluable support and protection for women and children suffering from domestic violence. We would love to show this charity some Clovelly love, and we encourage you to sign up for the event!
There are only a few tables left so book soon. Delicious food will be available, and if you are around at 19:00, you stand a chance to win the Club Draw, which will be sitting at R 9 000!
We would love to invite you to the above Mad Hatter’s High Tea, in aid of the SVPS’s 1st Team Waterpolo Tour. The food sounds scrumptious, and the organizers have some interesting and motivation talks planned.
Fun fact; our past Chairman, Vic Christian’s, granddaughter is on the team! We wish them all of the best for the tour, which takes place in the beginning of November.
For the love of animals, we invite you to take part in this wonderful golf day, taking place in a couple week’s time. DARG does such great work with rescued domestic animals, and this golf day goes a long way towards helping with the costs of running such a large operation. There are six fourballs available, but sponsored prizes and auction items would be so appreciated! You can also sponsor a hole on the course.
Louis Goosen, one of our Swallow members, achieved his second ‘hole in one’ whilst playing with Pauline & Manfred Krombas, who are also Swallow members, at their home club in Exeter, UK, last month. Hopefully, the good luck continues when they all return to Clovelly!
Pictured above left are Carl’s Catering Staff, Vuyo Mqoboka and Musa Pato, and on the right is Half Way House Cook, Nobom Zihlwele, with Musa:
PGA Pro & Clovelly’s Teaching Professional, Mike Michell, playing with Matthew McIlwain, Donny Tsai and Richard Shone. Mike and Richard went on to place first in the combined individual stableford competition.
Clovelly Staff Member, Daniel Musimbirachako, with his usual sunny smile. Daniel is expecting his first child in the next few weeks and will be away from Clovelly whilst on paternity leave. We wish him and his wife, Angie, all of the best!
The Ackerman Hall, ready for a fairy-tale wedding. It is hard to believe how a bit of lighting and fabric can transform a room! If you would like to hold your wedding at Clovelly, please email Sebastian on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Range Attendants, Joseph Wayeni and Hein Lourence. Remember that you can purchase balls from the Pro Shop up until 17:00 if you fancy a little evening time at the Range.
