Noordhoek Farm Village Golf Day
On Friday, 12th October, Clovelly Clovelly Country Club hosted the Noordhoek Farm Village Golf Day. Every year the Noordhoek Farm Village hosts a golf day in aid of a charity/club. This year the Noordhoek Farm Village was able to raise funds for the Masiphumelele Rugby Club.
The Masiphumelele Rugby Club is based at the Noordhoek sports grounds and, not only representing the South Peninsula, it actively supports the development of rugby for all communities in the area. A wonderful achievement of the rugby club is that it is one of the most racially diverse rugby clubs in the league, really representing the Ubuntu spirit! So certainly a wonderful club to support.
This golf day had 112 players and a fantastic vibe! The players were treated to food and drink activations on the course and burgers after golf.
Pictured above left are players Steven Reid, Anton Hochleutner, Riaz Vally and Justin Hendrin. On the right is one of the organizers, James Eckley, at registration with Iglin Grobbelaar and Mark Buchanan.
We would like to thank their sponsors; Noordhoek Farm Village (Pete de Bruin and Paul Le Roux), Combat Force (Colin Reeves), Personal Trust (John Le Roux), Coastal Kitchens (Wayne Ballard), Icarus Guarding Services (Mark Edwards), EsiLaw (Gustav Barkhuizen), Oxbow (Jason Maritz) and MichellGolf, who partnered with the organizers on the day.
Happy Birthday, Dawn!
We are nearing the conclusion of the Individual, Chammy Cup, and A Division Scratch Matchplay events for 2018.
There is only one outstanding semi-final left in the Individual Matchplay and this will see Steven Dunn take on Sugen Naidoo. Whoever wins will take on Richard Goveia who is waiting in the wings for the final match.
Ian Gordon and Brian Papas are set to take on Dave Thompson and Tim Henshall in the final for the Chammy Cup and we can’t wait to see the outcome.
Finally, the hotly contested A Division Club Matchplay has reached a head with Gareth Wobbe set to take on Dave Thompson in the final. So Dave is looking at two potential victories.
All of these are sure to be fantastic matches and we wish all the contestants the best of luck! It will be an exciting couple of weeks until we have our winners of 2018.
Happy Birthday, Dawn!
MichellGolf High-Performance Students
We are excited to let you know that in February 2018 MichellGolf started a High-Performance Student Program at Clovelly. Matthew Cooper, who has been a member of Clovelly since 2009, was joined by three new recruits; Richard Shone from Hout Bay, Donnie Tsai from the Free State and Matthew McIlwain from Durban. Jan Stals and Isabella van Rooyen form the junior part of the team and compete regularly with them. They can be seen often, playing with Mike Michell on the Course, and in fact, there was a picture of them in the last newsletter. Below left is Donny and on the right is Matthew.
The goal of the HPP is to make these young players the best they can possibly be. The players have a set training program, which sees them receiving training daily, and they are encouraged to compete in junior and premier amateur tours regularly. Matthew, Donnie, and Richard have all had Top 5 finishes in WP Premier Amateur Tour events and have all broken 70 at least once. Matthew has been very consistent of late with a number of Top 5’s and Donnie recently finished second at Metropolitan. There have been massive improvements since their 2017 results and the first HPP win is sure to be soon! Perhaps even this weekend at Clovelly! We are proud to announce that all HPP students have joined Clovelly as members and Matthew, Donnie and Richard have even played league!
Of course, we cannot continue without mentioning Jan and Isabella van Rooyen who have also been doing really well at their junior level this year and have been able to drop their handicaps incredibly. Isabella won our Ladies Club Champs at the age of 15 and Jan won the Junior u15 Winter Series, beating all the top u15 juniors in the province.
It has been really awesome to see everyone’s growth in the last nine months and we are excited to find out what is in store for these young golfer’s futures. Well done to MichellGolf for your hard work and the passion that you put into the next generation.
Katia plays in the SA Women’s IPT!
We would like to congratulate a wonderful golfer and member of Clovelly, Katia Shaff, who was chosen to play for the Western Province A-Team at the SA Women’s Inter-provincial Championship. Katia is pictured below with her foursomes partner, Vicki Traut.
The tournament, which saw the Western Province team taking first place in the stroke-play seeding day, winning it by over 10 shots, took place at the beginning of this month. This positive start put them in ‘A1 Division’ and saw them competing against three other talented teams; Southern Cape, Ekurhuleni and Gauteng.
The first two days saw WP victorious, winning the majority of their games. However, the last day proved a nail-biting end of the competition, with tough matches against a strong Ekurhuleni team. The weather was beautiful and warm and there were many birdies to halve holes. In the end and after a fantastic fight, the WP team finished second. Katia remarked that she had a great week and enjoyed being part of an amazing team! Well done to the team, their Team Manager, Annie Roos and, of course, Katia!

It was our honour to host the Ackerman Championships over the weekend of the 13th and 14th October. This event saw some of the best amateur women golfers in South Africa competing for the trophy. We host this event every second year and we always enjoy the energy and tenacity showed by these ladies.
We had a decent size field with just under seventy women taking part across three divisions, each with a cup named after the title family; C Division – the Jonathan Ackerman Cup, B Division – the Raymond Ackerman Cup and A Division – the Gus Ackerman Cup.
The first day saw the ladies competing in a strong South Easter and the second day a blustery North Wester, so the conditions were testing, to say the least! We are proud to say that we had five Clovelly representatives in the field, who can be seen in the image above; Bridget Woodhouse, Lavi Rend, Olivia Wood, Isabella van Rooyen, and Liz Cameron. Well done, ladies!
We were very proud that our own Olivia Wood (pictured in the image below right) won the C Division Jonathan Ackerman Trophy! Zara de Kleur (left) of Royal Cape came first in the B Division and first for the A Division, from Durbanville, was (centre) Jordan Rothman. Jordan shot a total of three over par to win by five shots. Congratulations ladies!
The Western Province Golf Union sent a lovely letter thanking the Clovelly staff and the Clovelly members for ” so generously giving up their course and allowing us to host our tournament at Clovelly Country Club”. We agree. Thank you Clovelly members for being so gracious. It was a wonderful opportunity to show off our lovely course.
New Craft Beer in the Bar
Bar Manager, Sebastian Brown, has introduced a new craft beer to the bar. These beers are straight from Namibia and are known as Camelthorn. Let us know if you like them.
You’re going to have ample opportunity to drink them, as we will be having a buy one get one free happy hour during all SA outbound rugby games over November. We will have a few other offers too, so keep an eye out for our advertising!
Pictured above are the last Ladies Medal winners. On the left Ladies Captain, Jacky White, is with one of the Silver Division first place winners, Margaret Macdonald. On the right, Jacky is with June Harrison, who tied with Margaret in first place, and Bruni Bensch, who was the Bronze winner.
Congratulations to Shane Hansen, who won the Lyall Morgan & Associates sponsored club draw on Friday, 12th October. Shane happened to be at the Club as he was playing in the Noordhoek Farm Village Golf Day, so it must have been his lucky day! Shane won R 9000.
Congratulations to Advanced Bookings Consultant, Nekisha Delcarme, on her marriage to the lovely Jeffrey Johnson. We wish you a lifetime of happiness!
It was a lovely treat to see Simone and her baby, Lecrae. Simone will be back in the Bookings Office by the beginning of November. She will be joined by Nekisha who will be returning from a month’s leave.
Jimmy Smith represented Clovelly in the Sanlam Cancer Challenge Finals which took place in Sun City. Well done, Jimmy, for getting so far!
On Thursday, 18th October we hosted the Annual Hindu Golf Day. McCafe and BMW had awesome displays on the 10th tee and the 96 players were spoiled to a delicious curry after the game. Thank you for choosing Clovelly to host your golf day!
