By now we hope that everyone is in the swing of things and embracing what is sure to be a fantastic year ahead. After a week of yellowtail and sharks in the bay, the quiet of the shark siren seems to have brought a calmness to the valley. We hope that you all get a chance to play at Clovelly whilst the sun shines and the wind takes a break.
Good luck to our Mid-Am and Masters Squads who kick off their 2019 seasons this Saturday against Steenberg and Rondebosch respectively!
Reminder; Beer Tasting at Amor’s Bistro
Many of you may have noticed a new face driving around the course. Now that his three months probation are almost up and it looks like we are going to keep him, we think it is time to introduce our new Workshop Assistant, Shaun Mclaren. Shaun has completed his NQF Level 4 in Automotive Body Repair and Maintenance and will be working directly under Workshop Manager, Victor. Shaun’s focus is on the course machinery fleet’s maintenance and repair, as well as assisting Course Manager, Steven Webber, with the odd job.
Although Shaun says that the last few months have presented quite the learning challenge, he has enjoyed the experience. Welcome to the Clovelly family Shaun! We wish you a long, successful career with us and hope that you come to love this special Club as much as the rest of us do.
RIP, Paul Voss
We will publish the details of Paul’s memorial as soon as we are aware of them.
MichellGolf Master Class
We would like to invite you to join our talented Professionals, Alan and Mike Michell of MichellGolf, this coming Friday for a masterclass on wedges.
This is a free session, and if you find that your golf is still lacking, as a member you can arrange a 40-minute lesson with MichellGolf for only R300. This will be sure to help!
We were delighted to have the talented photographer, Mark Sampson, back to capture our course at its best. You may remember that Mark visited Clovelly in December, only to have low-quality lighting conditions put a damper on his day. Well, he returned last week and graced us with these beautiful images.
AGMs Coming Up!
In a few week’s time, we will be holding our annual general meetings. The minutes from the last meetings are displayed in the golfer’s entrance, near the base of the stairs.
We really encourage you to join us. We will discuss the past year, in golf and finance, and the floor will be opened to questions and feedback. These meetings are usually over quickly, but they are very informative and we would love to have you join us.
The Flagstick…Should it stay or should it go?
Below is an interesting video from International Rules Official, Yves C. Ton-That, of Expert Golf, analyzing whether to leave the flagstick in the hole or have it removed when putting.
Of course, our readers are all aware that this was one of the rules affected at the start of the month right? If not, you can still attend the last two free rules sessions, one at Westlake Golf Club on 23 January 19:00 – 21:00, and another at Atlantic Beach Golf Club on 24 January, also from 19:00 – 21:00, to brush up your knowledge. You can also pick up your free rules book from Golf Director, Paul Stoner.
Book the Range
We are excited to offer the use of the Range as a venue for birthdays or other events. We are passionate about kids, of course, but we also cater for adult’s shindigs too. MichellGolf is available to incorporate light-hearted or focused golf clinics, and our own jumping castle, kid’s games, and catering are available.
Clovelly Festival Week
We are looking forward to the Clovelly Festival Week of 2019!
A few months away still, you have time to plan your Hollywood themed outfit. The best-dressed player stands to win a fantastic prize! We will have exciting auction items, a raffle with brilliant goodies to be won, awesome offerings on the course, and loads of fun. So save the date and remember to get your bookings in when they open next Friday. Raffles open at the same time.
Congratulations to Junior Member, Evan Marais, who finished second at the first ‘SA Kids Golf’ fixture at Durbanville over the weekend. He scored 5 over 41 with 3 pars and a birdie at the 9 hole event. Well done, Evan!
Captains vs Vice-Captains
I see a silhouetto of a…gorgeous palm tree.
Pictured above left with Tournament Secretary, Joan Mauchline, and Ladies’ Captain, Jacky White, are Tuesday’s Betterball Stableford winners, Anita Wooderson and Margaret Macdonald. On the right with Joan Mauchline and having come in second were Sharon Slater and Sara White.
Above are the Juniors that attended the ‘New Rules of Golf’ seminar, run by the WPGU and the Nomads, held at the Range.
We received a lovely mail from Swallow Members, Peter and Joan Bok, wishing us all a happy new year. After playing and falling in love with Clovelly first in early 1990, Peter and Joan have been visiting Clovelly for five years in a row and stay with us for two months over their winter.
As former founding President of a golf course and club in Holland, De Noord Hollandsche Golf Club, Peter knows how much effort it takes to keep a golf club in a good shape and has commended us for doing so with Clovelly. Joan and Peter have been members of the Kennemer Golf & Country Club in Holland for more than 30 years but always look forward to arriving at Clovelly, where they feel at home. Thank you, Peter and Joan, for your kind correspondence. We look forward to welcoming you back tomorrow!
Mind the bunker!
