We have had another wonderful two weeks at Clovelly and we are hoping that you have too! Christmas is around the corner and we are enjoying the steady increase of holiday-makers to the course.
We were privileged enough to have the legendary photographer, Mark Sampson, take some pictures of Clovelly. Unfortunately, the conditions for photography were not great and Mark will have to return next year when his busy schedule allows him too. However, I am sure that we can all agree that the above image is magical! We can’t wait for the rest.
Open Day with Steven
Matchplay Winner of 2018
It was with bated breaths that Richard Goveia, defending Champion, and Steven Dunn teed off early on Saturday morning to compete for the Gus Ackerman Trophy. Throughout the round, both players were playing fantastic golf and it became clear that this game was going to be a titanic battle.
At the turn, Steven had managed to secure a 2 up lead but Richard fought back with two solid birdies soon after. Although Richard stayed focused and played well, as the match became tighter Steven displayed great big-match temperament with a birdie on the tough par 4, 4th hole, eventually closing the game out 3&2 to be crowned Individual Matchplay Champion of 2018. Congratulations, Steven! A worthy win.
What a fantastic knock-out tournament to host! We would like to thank all the participants who took part, and we hope to see you all again next year, for another chance to become Champion.
We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Gareth Wobbe, our 2018 Club Champion, on his victory in the A Division’s Club Matchplay. This saw the top 16 players from the A Division in Club Champs, seeded according to their overall finish, take part in a knockout format competition.
Gareth met fierce opposition in Dave Thompson, but in the final but his true colours as Club Champion came through! Well done, Gareth, on being the Champion in both formats of the game, strokeplay and matchplay. We are excited to extend the Club Matchplay to all Divisions next year!
Ladies Spring Open Day
On Thursday, 15th November we hosted the Ladies Spring Open Day, this time with a Hawaiian theme. The Ladies Committee went all out, arranging pineapples and strelitzias for the tables, fun challenges on the course such as ‘Kilauea Volcano’ for the rock on the 2nd Hole, ‘Waikiki Beach’ for the bunker on the 10th, and loads more fun ideas.
The ladies responded to their Committee’s enthusiasm, arriving at the club dressed for the occasion. Our favorite costume for the day has to be our wonderful Bubble Emmett’s, which was literally…a costume! Which she played golf in!
Congratulations to the winners of the day; Christine Sauerwein, Ronel Nel, Lulu Netter, and Marion Howells, who came in with a score of 87.
We would also like to give a big thank you to the Ladies Committee and Members, who are always keen to go all-out to make their golf days fun and memorable. Of course, to our amazing sponsors, Fine & Country, Guthrie & Collananni, Sublime Confectionary, and Mantellis; thank you for your continued support! We love having you on board.
Raymond Ackerman Golf Academy
The Raymond Ackerman Golf Academy recently moved into the Clubhouse and we are happy to report that they have fitted in as if they have always been here! At the moment, whilst learning how to play golf (as you can see in the below picture where their Golf Coach, Dave Matthews, teaches the basics of putting), the RAGA students are also studying for exams.
Luckily, it is not all work! On Saturday, 10th November the kids got a chance to participate in the 5km Cape Town Colour Run at Sea Point. We love these ‘before and after’ photos and hope that a great time was had by all.
We would like to wish all of the students the best of luck with their upcoming exams. We are sure that your Coaches, Shaddie, Roxy and Carel, will give you all of the necessary tools to ace your exams and your hard work will pay off.
Golf Days at Clovelly
We have been the excited hosts of both the DARG Golf Day and the SA Navy Golf Day the last few weeks.
The DARG Golf Day is one that we are very fond of hosting, not only because it is such a fantastic cause, but because Debra, the organizer, has so much dedication and talent when coming to planning the event, that it is impossible not to get inspired by her enthusiasm.
The DARG Golf Day had 84 players this year and we are delighted to announce that their nett profit grew by nearly 25% with R140 310.00 raised! Although this might seem like a lot, it only covers 56% of one month of DARG’s R 250 000 per month operating expenses, which means that 17 days were covered by this golf day.
We salute you, Debra, and your team for all that you do for these animals! Besides the 200 animals in the facility, DARG also helps dogs and cats in the surrounding lower-income communities of Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu. Funding goes towards sterilizations, emergency veterinary care, basic pet care, and general veterinary treatments. The cost to DARG for this service averages R55 000 per month and can be as high as over R90 000.
The SA Navy Golf Day took place on Friday, 9th October and this golf day kept us on our toes from start to finish. The Navy team, led by Captain Ncanana and his assistant, Rob, was dynamic and they brought a great energy to Clovelly.
The players also came in good spirits and we thoroughly enjoyed being part of this event. Pictured above is the very charming Commander in charge of the Navy Band, who played for the players after their game. What a privilege to be able to host these gentlemen.
Black Friday at the Pro Shop
Well done to our young golfer, Evan Marais, who for the first time, broke 100 a couple of weeks ago whilst playing at Durbanville Golf Club. Evan, who is 8 years old and currently being coached by MichellGolf, shot an awesome 96. Congratulations, Evan!
The Majicek Group recently visited Clovelly. What a happy group of visitors; it was such a pleasure to host them.
Another happy group of golfers to grace Clovelly was the “Mr. Ackerman and Friends” golfing group, dressed in the colours of our favourite convenience store, Pick n’ Pay.
Fred Fautley relaxes in the bar. We wonder whether it is his drink of choice or the venue that brings such a smile to our past Captain’s face.
Tuesday’s Betterball Stableford winners, Anne Booth and Margaret Macdonald, with Lady Captain, Jacky White, and Vice-Captain, Joan Mauchline.
Rolf Hediger, one of our Swallows, sent in this amazing picture of Golf Course La Gruyere, in Switzerland, where he recently played. As beautiful as Clovelly is, we are jealous! If Gruyere sounds familiar, it is probably because of the delicious cheese that originates from the same area.
