What a wonderful past two weeks we have had at Clovelly. We are so enjoying the summer, but what is not to love about the warm sunshine, long evenings where you can sneak in a quick nine holes, and all of the happy holiday-makers in Cape Town.

The South Peninsula has also been graced with a visit from Buffel, a southern elephant seal who’s made himself at home on Fish Hoek Beach, where he will remain for another few weeks whilst he finishes molting. It is rare for Buffel’s species to come this far north as southern elephant seals are indigenous to the sub-Antartic coast, although Buffel has been spotted in False Bay a few times since 2014. This is a great opportunity to bring your family to have a peek at this sweet seal, who does nothing much other than dozing in the sun and flipping sand onto his back. You may be lucky enough to see dolphins in the bay, on the hunt for yellowtail. On Sunday evening you could see then jumping out of the water in the attempt to catch the fish! After your beach trip, we would love for you to pop into Clovelly. Spend some time at the Range, play golf, have a delicious lunch at Carl’s, or a scrumptious dinner at Amor’s Bistro whilst watching the sunset.

We would like to give a warm welcome to our new members, Ron Buissinne, Thomas Egger, Daniel Felber, Matteo Frabetti, Peter Gardener, Alastair Graham, Dale Herbert, Renata Honegger, Brandon Mitchell, Chris Newman, Suzanne van der Spuy, Dane Hansen, Tyronne Ferguson, Tyrone Leach, James Posthumus, Mark Fisher, and Brenda Hope. We hope that you feel at home at Clovelly and love every minute that you spend here!

League Update

Although some of us are still settling into the new year, there was little chance to rest for our League teams. Both Men’s and Ladies’ League had their first matches a couple of weekends ago.

Our 2019 Mid-Am and Masters Leagues kicked off on the 26th of January, with the Mid-Amateurs tackling our neighbours, Steenberg, while our Masters side took on Rondebosch. Both teams were full of optimism and eager to get off to a winning start.

Both matches proved to be testing, however, a strong showing from our home teams, along with some gutsy performances away, allowed us to secure victories! The Mid-Am results were 5 ½ to 2 ½ in our favour, with Gareth Wobbe, Daniel Joseph and Willie Mentoor securing home points. Away victories from Dave Thompson and Tim Henshall, coupled with a dramatic half point from Antonio Bruni, saw us over the line. In the Masters fixture, our home teams of Jon Bernard and James Wight, and Erl Hvidsten and Steven Dunn won their matches, while away the fighting spirit of Wizz Good and Craig Small secured the ½ point we needed to win 2 ½ to 1 ½.

What an exciting start to the season! We are looking forward to our next fixtures which will be against Parow and Atlantic Beach in Mid-Am and Masters respectively. Good luck to all and keep up the winning momentum!

The Ladies have 10 rounds ahead of them and are scheduled to finish in October (unless the teams qualify for the playoffs, then quarters, semis and finals in November, which could make for a long season). They had a great start–Bronze 2 beat King David Mowbray at home, 2/1. Apparently, it was a hard-fought battle, with 2 games going to the 18th and the other to 17th. Well done, Bronze 2!

Bronze 3 played against Kuils River at Kuils River and had a fantastic win, beating them 3-0! Bronze 1 had a bye and our Silver team went to Strand and played against Steenberg, whom they, unfortunately, lost 2/4 to. There is still a long season ahead and we are looking forward to great results from a great team.

Good luck, Ladies, for your next round on 19th February and thank you to League Secretary, Birdie Jenkinson, for the report!

Congratulations, Mvusi

This week we heard some wonderful news that we have to share. Most of you would have had the pleasure of meeting Andy, our firecracker of a bar waiter. Andy is always ready with a smile and a joke and he has cemented himself into the hearts of many. He took great pride in telling us that his son, Mvusi Wowo, has been accepted into Stellenbosch University.

Stellenbosch is a prestigious university, having been rated the second-highest ranked university in Africa, and Mvusi will be completing a Bachelor of Engineering, specializing in Chemical Engineering. We wish Mvusi the best of luck for his future. We are sure that great things are in store for him and we are rooting for him all the way!

Jessica Green Shining in the USA

Many of our readers know Jessica Green, one of Clovelly’s star golfers. Jessica is currently studying Business Management at Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma, USA, where she received a 70% golf scholarship and is playing on their women’s golf team.

Jessica has recently had a holiday at home in Cape Town, where she received some valuable coaching from Alan Michell of MichellGolf. She told us that she is “living her dream of playing college golf in the United States” and although she is so far from home she has settled in well and she loves her teammates and coach. Jessica says that the golf team has a vigorous fitness routine with weight training and running in the early mornings and that she has been maintaining high academic grades too, putting her on the Presidents Honour Roll for all three of her semesters so far.

We are so proud of Jessica who is not only a wonderful representation of Clovelly but of South Africa. We are sure that she has been an inspiration to many and we wish her all of the best for the next couple of years. Well done, Jess!

Tips from the Pros

by Alan Michell, MichellGolf

A Putting Drill to Create Topspin

When putting, you want your ball to have topspin so that it hugs the ground as it rolls and stays true to its path.

An easy drill to help you achieve topspin on a putt in to place a coin behind your ball whilst practicing. Stroke the putt and miss the coin so you hit your ball higher, creating a forward roll. If done correctly, the coin will remain as is and your ball will run straight.

In Pictures

Our Seniors had another great Fine&Country sponsored competition on Monday 28th January 2019. The weather was lovely and sunny, although a little windy, and a full field of 58 players took part in the competition.

The winners of the competition, pictured above with Mike Tiffin, were Bill Hope, Tony Matthews, Clive Mildenhall, and John Boulter.  A winning score of 93 points saw each of them walking away with a bottle of Ballantine’s scotch whiskey. Thanks to Tony Webb of Fine&Country.

Greens Team Staff Members, Panganai and Patrick, were spotted near the 18th Green last week

The Chaerli Group enjoyed their welcome drink before teeing off last Thursday.

Our Ladies played their Nationals vs Internationals Competition on Tuesday, 22nd January. They had 48 ladies take part and the National team, clearly benefiting from access to Clovelly throughout the year, managed another win.

There was a fire in the reeds adjacent to the 14th hole a couple of weeks ago. This gave our Course Manager, Steven Webber, an exciting opportunity to expose his staff to the correct procedures to be taken in the event of a fire. The Greens Staff, with two hoses, and the fire brigade, with another three hoses, extinguished the fire in no time.

One of our excellent Starter’s, Solly Daniels. There are not many people as kind and humble as Solly. He embodies all of the Clovelly qualities and we are proud to have him.

We hope that everyone has a fantastic week!

Congratulations to Mark Weber who achieved a hole-in-one last Monday.

Remember that bookings are open for the Festival Week, and raffle tickets go on sale this week! We have these exciting prizes to be won:
