A message from Pat van Heerden

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to those members who attended our Mid Year Dinner.

I have no doubt that Wendy was well pleased to have her fellow club members present to celebrate her inauguration into the Southern Africa Golf Hall of fame. And then, at the dinner, to being awarded Honorary Life Membership of Clovelly Country Club. Both honours were very well deserved.

Jonathan Ackerman and Francois Pienaar, who was the guest speaker, at the mid-year dinner.

My thanks, also, to Jonathan Ackerman for his substantial contribution in making it a fun evening for all.

And what can we say that hasn’t already been said about our South African rugby hero, Francois Pienaar? ‘Lucky Frankie P’ was just fantastic and had the audience roaring with laughter as he related personal anecdotes from a long and inspiring career.

Last, but definitely not least, our Clovelly unsung heroes. The Clovelly team of staff were unbelievably helpful with anything that was asked of them. Our ‘Laughing Cavalier’, Carl, was outstanding. My thanks to him and his staff who produced exactly what I asked for and more. The bar staff and waiters – great work as always. I had the feeling that everyone was hell bent on making it a fantastic evening. Great team effort all round! Hope to see you all at our next function………..

Thanks to Pat van Heerden and John for organising a wonderful dinner on Wednesday evening to mark Wendy’s inauguration into the Southern Africa Golf Hall of Fame – congratulations to Wendy on being awarded Honorary Life Membership of Clovelly – an honour richly deserved.

The Sanlam Cancer Challenge had to be postponed yet again due to the weather which was only good for ducks! The weather for Tuesday 11th looks good, so we will play it then and move the Haggis Trophy to next month’s medal on the 2nd July. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, please put your names down for next week – especially those who don’t always play on a Tuesday.

The Book for the Eclectic has been placed in the Locker Room so go for it!

A unique view of the course

I have returned back to work after being on leave and can honestly say that I missed this place.

Over the course of my leave period I was fortunate enough to be invited to play all three of the Fancourt courses, Pinnacle Point, Steenberg, Langebaan and Royal Cape.

As is often the case when I visit another golf course, I compare how they do things to how we do things. I must say that I have returned feeling proud to be part of Clovelly Country Club.

Chammy Cup

The first of the Chammy Cup games were played yesterday and a big congratulations must go to Zubair Smith and Llewellyn Fredericks for beating Willie Mentoor and Padraic McMahon 4 and 3.

I spoke to both Willie and Padraic after their match and asked them what had happened. Their response was simply that they were out played by the pair from the Raymond Ackerman Golf Academy. Zubair plays off a handicap of 15 and Llewellyn off a handicap of 20.

In my opinion both of these players are future stars. Their swings are technically sound and both have good minds on their shoulders.

I look forward to monitoring their progress in the Chammy Cup.

To all who have entered in this years Individual Matchplay, a reminder that the first round is to be played on or before the 8th of June.

Jonathan Bernard: Atlantic Beach Open

Some more news is Clovelly member Jonathan Bernard is in my opinion one of the hardest workers on his game. He exudes a passion for the game and is always searching for perfection.

All this work paid off when he carded a first round 66 in the Atlantic Beach Open. His afternoon round, a respectable 75 around the tight course, resulted in a second place finish.

We are proud of Jonathan and would love to see him chosen to represent Western Province someday.

Cedric Touzard: Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open

There just seems to be an abundance of good news this week. Cedric Touzard has returned from the Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open.

The event was played at the Legends Golf and Safari Resort. Well Cedric played superb golf with a 73 in the second round and had a 3 round total of 234 to win his section by 13 shots.

He also tied for second place overall and this is a real fantastic achievement. Cedric was beaming yesterday when I spoke to him.

Ladies League Report – by Birdie Jenkinson

Times are getting tough, Swallows have flown and it is holiday time for some.

I know there are girls out there that would like to give league a go. No matter what your handicap. Lynn Berrisford and Trish McMahon, thanks for helping out, Trish sorry I could not find you a partner, we will sort out early next month.

Next league game is on the 18th June. Please let’s keep the date open, so that we can field full teams. Teams are going out on the 2nd June I hope, I leave for the UK on the 3rd. So will be up to the Captains to find players, should girls not be able to play.

I have a list of those not available; thanks for giving me advance warning.

Let’s keep the Clovelly flag flying.

After such success shown from the last Beginner Ladies Classes offered, Mike and I have decided to offer it again and we plan to start in early July.

I urge you to invite any friends or family members that you feel would like to learn this game of a life time.

Those who participated in this course last time are now playing regular golf and attend follow up sessions where they play on the course.

I would like to see the ladies section grow and feel that this is a platform to facilitate that. If you wish to enrol please call the shop directly on 021 782 6410.

That covers the quiet and refined part…… the quiz was absolutely great and many, many thanks to Chris & Katie (pictured above) who gave up their evening to entertain us so amazingly well.

The questions had some of us baffled and others seemed to know all the answers (thank goodness we had two such people on our team…)

There were 12 teams of eight ranging in age from teenagers to folk in their 70’s.

There was a team from Raga (Raymond Ackerman Golf Academy) which was so good to see, a few Clovelly staff with spouses (pictured above with Club Chairman Dave Van Eyk in the forefront…) and great support from members and their guests.

If any of you have not heard our Club Manager, John Spyker, singing at the top of his voice ‘The House of the Rising Sun’ with his head thrown back and arms up to the sky …. then believe me you have missed nothing… I can honestly say that on behalf of everyone who was there – what a great evening!

The music ranged from the 1950’s to present day and from Doris Day to Adele. Pictured above is Team “7 Roses and One Thorn” – no prizes for guessing that Ron Dunn was the thorn!

Clovelly hosted the Captains’ Society last week – a field of 18 players enjoyed the challenges and beauty of our course and vowed to come back to enjoy it again!

We were very pleased to once again host the Seniors Golf on Thursday after an absence of a few years. There was a field of 80 players and we were pleased to see that Gail Crookes was in the winning four ball and Carrie Smales in the second fourball – well done !

Our Tuesday competition was a Nassau Stableford, which made a nice change.

New Liquor Licence Act

Staff visit to Royal Navy frigate HMS Argyll

Last Friday evening Emelia Coetzer (International Booking Clerk) and Robert Martin (Assistant Green Keeper) were welcomed to a cocktail party aboard the Royal Navy frigate HMS Argyll which is currently docked in Simons Town. (see picture left)

The pair were given a full tour of the ship (which Emelia found a little difficult in stiletto heels….) and thoroughly enjoyed the cocktail party where about 60 people were present.

On Saturday afternoon 8 of the ship’s crew played a round of golf at Clovelly to celebrate the birthdays of Commanding Officer Tim Neilde’s & Garry McCormack another crew member.

This is their first visit to South Africa and there is a lot more golf planned at Clovelly for the crew during their stay.

Ladies Section

Well done to all – special thanks to Marie Pardey and Bruni Bensch (who was not well) for stepping in to help when numbers were down.

Next league match is on 21 May – we start foursomes. Birdie is looking for extra players especially those with handicaps 20 – 30 – give her a shout. We were very pleased to host the quarterly Captains’ Society get –together on 29 April.

There were 14 players in the field from near and far. The ladies really enjoyed playing our course. Many thanks to Carrie for securing the venue and organising the day.

Interclub or Rooibos as it is known was held at Hermanus and besides being wet on Friday, we had a lovely time. Our fourteen players did Clovelly proud – Bridget and June coming second in the “C” Division, Pat and Bev being counted out in to third place. Mel and Maggie made their Rooibos excursion a memorable one by coming fifth in the “D” Division and having the best score in that division on Sunday.

Next year’s ‘Rooibos‘ will be held in Robertson and there will be a new sponsor. We would like to send an even bigger team next year!

Thanks to Lilian and Jacky for manning the stations at home for the Monthly Mixed – I believe a very successful one, sponsored by Martin Barry of Pick n Pay Clothing – thanks also to Dave Liebrecht, who helped to secure the sponsorship.

The winners were Jo and Neil Gardener and Trish and Padraig McMahon. Well done!

Last Friday Clovelly Country Club was very proud to have one of our members inducted into the South African Golfing Hall of Fame. The event was held at Steenberg Golf Club.

Wendy Warrington (pictured right) whose name is well known to many of our members (after all she has been Lady Golf Champion 27 times) was recognized for her many golfing achievements – acknowledgement that is well deserved.

Our Club President Mr. Raymond Ackerman proudly presented Wendy with her award. Wendy’s family and many of her friends were present.

Clovelly Ladies Rooibos Interclub at Hermanus

Clovelly Ladies at Rooibos Interclub

Fourteen Clovelly girls went to Hermanus to play in the Rooibos Interclub 54 holes over 3 days.

We are pleased to report every one had a great golfing break making new friends and catching up with old ones.

We won a 5th place in the ‘D’ Division with Mel Charlwood and Maggie Martin who also got the best score for Sunday.

We also won a 3rd place (counted out) in the ‘C’ Division for Pat Holland and Bev Thompson and got a runners up (counted in) in the ‘C’ Division for June Harrison and Bridget Woodhouse.

Well done girls and thanks to everyone for being there and joining in with all the fun and hard work.

Friday nights to come…

On Friday 10th May, John Spyker, our Club Manager is taking our International Bookings Clerk, Emelia, to a cocktail party on board the HMS Argyll which will be docked in Simons Town.

Some of the officers on board have booked to play our course whilst they are in the area. We are sure they will enjoy their golf and we look forward to welcoming them to our club.

Bridal Fair

Last weekend, Rochelle who works for Carl our Caterer, spent the weekend at Grand West at the ‘Fab Bridal Fair’ where Clovelly Country Club had a stand.

Rochelle reported that about 3 000 people attended each day and we hope to have some weddings here in the near futre as a result.

It’s official summer has said ‘good bye’ and winter has said ‘I’m here’.

Our Hollow Tyning went very well with Steven reporting no problems with the machines.

The heavy rain we experienced on Wednesday resulted in no golf being played. The course was flowing with water as was most of Cape Town with reports from Wynberg that roads were flooded resulting in residents unable to drive to work.

Preferred lies will come in to play from 1st May as will the adjustment of handicap when more than one tee is in play for a competition. I urge you all to read the notice board or pop in to my office for that one.

As it is winter now and the activities take on a change from more outdoor to more indoor I have decided to every now and then inform you of what is a good way to spend a winter’s day in Cape Town. Well for this week it’s the Hout Bay Market near to Snoekies (See picture fbelow). It is superb and has amazing coffee plus many great food options and plenty of interesting goodies for purchase or browsing. Give it a try and let me know of other great ideas of what to do in the winter in Cape Town.

The bar has shown a profit for March and the club draw has remained a popular event each week. I have spoken to George and Paul and a Bingo evening is on the cards for the upcoming months. We will also be doing a music quiz which will be fun and I look forward to that.

I’m now looking forward to the Chammy Cup and the Individual Match play coming up soon, I think I just might enter for the Chammy Cup…….

The ‘Pro Wash’ car wash at Clovelly is doing rather well. They had a good season and are now gearing up for the winter months. They are going to be running some specials from 1st May.

On Monday’s, Frankie’s School for just R35 can get a wash and dry and for all the others for just R60 you can get a wash, dry and vacuum for your vehicle.

Men’s Club Championships 2013

The last two weeks have been filled with excitement surrounding the 2013 Men’s Club Championships. We had 123 players competing in the three divisions.

The weather on the first day was very accommodating with some good scores being posted. In the ‘A’ division it was Dave Thompson and Willie Mentoor with level par rounds, the ’B’ division had both Michael Muller and Rob Gunst carding 7 over par rounds and in the ‘C’ division it was Vic Christian who stole the show scoring an 83 gross off an 18 handicap resulting in a 65 nett, well played Vic!!

The second round was a little more exciting with the greens getting up to 11 on the stimp and winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour.

The players who pegged it up in the morning were all too happy to avoid the grunt of the conditions. In the ‘A’ division it was Daniel Joseph who knuckled down and played superb golf. He kept his focus and managed a 1 over par 73. In the ’B’ division Mike Muller was delivering some spectacular golf with yet another round under the 80’s.

Mike Muller with two rounds of 79 was showing signs of a man on a mission. The ‘C’ division saw a familiar face of Pieter Coetzee rising to the challenge posting an 86 gross nett 70 in tough conditions.

In an interview with Pieter Coetzee after his superb round, he said he just felt very comfortable out there. Pieter has been struggling a little to find that form but seems well on his way to finding it. He went on to mention that the greens were in great condition and he was reading the lines and making putts. As we all know if you are gelling on the greens and making putts you can win tournaments.

After the first two rounds our leaders in the ‘A’ division were Daniel Joseph and Dave Thompson on 149, ‘B’ division Michael Muller on 158 and in the ‘C’ division Pieter Coetzee on 175.

It can often feel like a lengthy week for the division leaders. All kinds of thoughts race through the mind as those players will try come out and take home the silverware.

At last the final weekend was upon the players with the weather forecast being more than fair on the 3rd round. The third round is commonly known as moving day. This was certainly the case for ’B’ division player James Eckley who shot lights out scoring a 73 gross of a 12 handicap. This gave him a 61 nett and left players looking at the score board dazed and confused and left most feeling a little envious.

In the ‘B’ division our leader Mike Muller had some swing issues on the day. After his game he was asked what went wrong. He replied by saying he felt great but only realised later that he was swaying big time through the shots. Willie Mentoor had a great 3rd round 70, two under par but was still trailing by 10 going into the final day. In the ‘C’ division Pieter Coetzee was quietly going about business and playing consistent golf.

With the final round upon us Dave Thompson was leading the ‘A’ division by 8 shots with Daniel Joseph and Antonio Bruni chasing him down. It was a great display of final round golf by both Daniel and Antonio.

Daniel played really well managing a level par round 72 but the real star of the day was our Premier League Captain, Antonio Bruni, who had a 3 under par 69 resulting in a 3 shot lead over Daniel Joseph and K.J Lee.

Men’s Club Championships

The first two rounds played this past weekend went off very well apart from the weather turning a little chilly and windy on Sunday afternoon.

We had 124 players in the field in the 3 divisions and by all accounts they enjoyed their 36 holes of golf.

This week on Thursday we have our Clovelly Ladies Open day in the afternoon.

The field is full and we pray for nice weather and hope all the ladies taking part have a wonderful round and much fun afterwards at the prize giving.

Hollow Tyning

Don’t forget that we are hollow tyning the course on Monday 15th & Tuesday 16th April so the course, pro shop, bar and catering will all be closed for those two days.

The office and booking office will be open from 8 am to 4pm.

Golf events next week

On Thursday next week we welcome the Sunflower Fund Golf Day players – The Sunflower Fund raises funds for the amazing work they do to ‘give a little – save a life’ in helping to find a match for bone marrow stem cell patients.

On Friday next week we have ‘Jack the Lad’s’ golf day – Jack is a profoundly disabled 4 year old and is also the grandchild of Carl our Caterer so we all hope they raise a lot of money to assist the family with his enormous medical costs.

Yes, it’s that time of the year again, nervous energy, stress, grip too tight, where is my Betterball partner? Yebo! Club Championships… with less than a week to go our club members are becoming excited at the thought of playing four rounds of Medal.What’s great is to witness the camaraderie amongst the members and listen to the Great War stories. We wish everyone taking part the best of luck and may the best man win.

We would like to thank Andrew Roberts of Atlantic Forwarding for his generosity in sponsoring our Club Championships, as well as Dave Odendaal who always comes to the party.

As the summer slowly winds down and autumn draws nearer, it’s time to say ‘bon voyage’ to all our Swallows and visitors, who have supported Clovelly during the past three months. Clovelly still remains the number one local golf destination in Cape Town.

Other matters of interest are the payment of subscriptions which are due on 1st April and as from that day the new green fees will come into operation.

Remember the pleasing aspect of this model is that you can create your own personal subscription model, to suit your own individual requirements.

The Management and the Staff of Clovelly Country Club would like to wish all our Members a Happy Easter weekend.

We bid farewell to many of our Swallows last week and will be doing the same this week – we will look forward to seeing them all in the springtime.

Well done to Katia Shaff and Alison vans Agnew for getting through to the Semi Finals at the Pam Golding WP Amateur Championships and thanks to all our girls who braved that awful weather on the Monday to do their thing!

The Ladies Open Day sheet is full so we are looking forward to a wonderful day on the 11th April – our sponsors, Ottery Pick n Pay Hypermarket, have once again come to the party with great prizes and goodies. Thanks to Louis Nunes and Walied Adams for all their hard work and commitment.

The charity we are supporting this year is the Sinethemba School in Masiphumilele. Lilian and Caroline visited the school last week and were blown away by what they saw.

This school caters for mentally handicapped children – they are collected from home in the morning and looked after by a dedicated team of teachers and helpers, who also create opportunities for them to develop their skills to their full potential.

Ottery Pick and Pay has donated hampers for our raffle. We will start selling tickets upstairs next week, so please support this very worthy cause. We hope to have a cheque handing-over ceremony at the prize giving.

Thanks to Lilian for attending the RAGA Student Awards Evening on the 20th March. These young people are a credit to Clovelly and the well rounded approach to their development employed by the Academy augurs well for their future.
