We have officially entered our last month of high-season! January and February sped by and we loved every minute of both months.

We have had a very busy few weeks organising our AGMs, Festival Week and our Raymond Ackerman Invitational Golf Day, and we are looking forward to it all being over so that we can focus on our upcoming Club Championships and the Singles Matchplay and Chammy tournaments.

This is a special week for us as on Saturday, 10th March, our President, Mr. Raymond Ackerman, will be celebrating his birthday.

Mr. Ackerman is such an important part of Clovelly and we wish him another successful year filled with joy and good health!

Isabella van Rooyen

We are delighted to report that one of our young rising stars, Isabella van Rooyen (pictured below with Ladies’ Vice-Captain, Marnie Wolmarans), recorded her personal best score of 79 gross last Tuesday, whilst playing in the Ladies Competition. She then returned to the course on Wednesday afternoon and a level par front nine put her well on her way to breaking her personal record, and she ended up carding another personal best of 78 gross!

A solid performance from her younger brother, Jan Stals van Rooyen, alongside her, meant that the “brother-sister” team won the competition on Wednesday. Jan also came second under the A Division in this week’s Medal Competition.

We have a feeling that we are going to be seeing quite a bit of these two in future results sheets and we are so excited to watch them progress under their Dad, Golf Committee Member, Jan van Rooyen’s passionate coaching and encouragement. We may even be looking at future Club Champions! Keep up the good work!

Senior Club Champs

On Monday 26th February our Seniors held their Senior Club Championships, using a Medal Scratch Format. The event was sponsored for the first time by Fine and Country who donated all the magnificent prizes. The Clovelly Seniors are most grateful to Tony and Lorraine Webb who were undoubtedly responsible for the large field. Their sponsorship of this and other Senior events has created a serious boost to our Seniors’ charitable collections which are at record levels. The weather was also very kind, with sunny skies and light winds.

The event attracted 63 competitors which is a record entry, far in excess of previous years. The entries were boosted by a large number of Swallows who competed. The date was brought forward from its normal spot immediately after the Clovelly Club Champs; this was done to allow for more Swallows to compete and was a great success. It will be continued in future years.

The overall champion was the player who scored the most points playing from Scratch. Our congratulations go to George Bowes who won the event to become the Senior Champion for 2018 with a great score of 29 points. The above picture shows George receiving his trophy from last year’s winner Dave Martin. All other prizes were awarded to the top five scores in division A and B after the player’s handicaps were added. Congratulations to all prize winners and the organisers of the event!

Monthly Mixed

On Sunday our Ladies’ Section held their third Monthly Mixed of the year, and their first scramble format. Bridget Woodhouse, our Ladies’ Captain, loves this format as she says it “involves four people making a decision about the next shot and you can find yourself playing a shot from somewhere on the golf course that you have never been before”. She added that “In a normal ‘Alliance, 2 scores to count,’ a player may not have the opportunity to contribute any points to the total and that the players play their individual shots with little or no communication with the rest of the fourball”.

We have to agree that a scramble format definitely allows for more of a team spirit, providing that everyone has agreeable partners! The Ladies’ decision worked well on Sunday and many players commented that they had enjoyed the format and day. Well done to all players and to the organisers of another fantastic event.

Pictured above is our winning fourball, who came in with 56 points; Bruni Bensch, Jackie Shaw, Derek Shaw and Malcolm Shaw.

Pick n Pay Clothing were the sponsors of this event and going forward, all Pick n Pay Clothing Mixes will be scrambles. The next event will take place in November. Thanks to Member, Dave Liebrecht, for always helping to put this together.

The Ladies would also like to thank Bookings Consultant, Nekisha, for the initiative she used by organising the scorecards for the day.

Ladies‘ Captains vs Vice-Captain’s Competition

Our Ladies had another wonderful event this week–their Captain’s vs Vice-Captain’s Competition. Forty-seven ladies played and the Captain’s team (pictured above) walked away as winners of the day.

Well done to everyone who played! The Vice-Captain’s team(pictured below), made up of twenty-four players, scored a total of 700 points, with an average of 29.16. The Captain’s team, with twenty-three players, scored a total of 685 points, with an average of 29.78, so as usual, it was a tight match and everyone should be proud of themselves!

League Update

Unfortunately, our Masters and Mid-Am teams had a challenging weekend against Atlantic Beach and Westlake.

Sadly, Atlantic Beach has really been affected by the drought, and our players found the course’s condition made for difficult golf. Both of our away sides lost, but the matches were close with only 2 Stableford points difference in each of them. Luckily, our home team managed to make use of their home advantage and secured two wins, by a total of 10 Stableford points, giving us a draw win result!

We have been very blessed during the drought and we hope that Atlantic Beach will bounce back to its usual self soon. We wish them all of the best!

Our next fixture is against Steenberg and a victory here would put us well on the way to a semi-final spot. Keep it up!!

Our Mid-Am fixture was against a strong Westlake team who have recently beat top spot contenders, Belville. It was a close matchup, as always, with both sides looking to secure maximum points at home.

Our away team didn’t manage to secure a point away, which meant that we needed all 4 of our home points to halve the matchup. After an afternoon of ups and downs, the deciding result came down to the last hole of the last match! Unfortunately, after a tight matchup, a drop shot on the last hole cost us the point and gave Westlake the win.

We now stand at the top of the log, however, in 2nd place, Westlake still has a game in hand. Our next fixture is against Belville and will need to be a win for us, in order to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

Well done to all and we wish them the best of luck! (No pressure)

Clovelly Golf Festival

Our Clovelly Festival Week has officially started! We are so excited to have the opportunity to spoil our members and, at the same time, raise funds for future projects on the course. We hope that you all have a wonderful time. Remember that there is a prize for the best dressed, so if you are feeling brave enough, please come as any Disney character of your choice. We would personally love to see a Pumba and Timone, Tarzan or one of the many villains.

On Saturday we will be announcing our raffle winners, so if you haven’t bought a ticket yet please speak to any Pro Shop Assistant, Bookings Consultant or Bartender. There are some AMAZING prizes to be won. Philip Powell will be holding our auction on the same evening, and not only is this super fun, but there will be some amazing items to buy at a bargain.

Please see below for more information.
