We are excited to welcome Spring to our Course! It may just be our imagination, but everything seems a little warmer and greener already.
The lovely weather that we experienced over the weekend signaled the start of our Spring Hollow Tyning. This kicked off in the late afternoon sun of Sunday afternoon and continued into the night to ensure that the Course would be open on Wednesday again.
Whilst our Course Manager, Steven Webber, and his team were busy with the Course over Monday and Tuesday, our Golf Operations staff sat through a full day of customer service training on Monday, with a goal that our (already great) team will be even more accommodating and friendly towards our members and visitors in the future.
On Tuesday the Golf Operations and Admin staff were treated to a day of fun and team-building. At 8:30 we all got on a bus and headed to SWAT Laser Tag in Melkbosstrand. The start of the day was not uneventful, as after a beautiful drive out, the team arrived at a rainy outdoor area and our bus promptly got stuck in the soft sand! No amount of pushing or ‘resourceful’ thinking could get the bus out, but the skies had cleared up beautifully and the team headed out to the Laser Tag arena.
Once there, the staff were split into three teams and we battled it out against each other. It was apparent from early on that Manager, John Spyker, was the number one target! After a couple of games, the team was treated to a wonderful ‘Afrikaans’ meal made up of a whole lamb on the braai, home-made rolls and seed loaves with home-made jam to go with them, a variety of delicious salads and a pumpkin tart that tasted exactly like dessert! Luckily, the chef and a couple of friends had succeeded in getting the bus out of the sand in time for us to return home.
Much fun was had by all, and the staff would like to thank Manager, John Spyker, and Golf Director, Paul Stoner, for a fantastic day!
Masters and Mid-Am League
On Saturday we hosted teams from Westlake and Bellville in the Masters and Mid-Am Leagues respectively.
Both visiting clubs proved to be tough opposition, however, our strength at home in the Masters side showed as we managed to claim both points at home.
Our Mid-Am home side’s fate was slightly different, however, as Bellville sent a loaded side to visit, in the hopes of securing a victory. At halfway we were up in two matches, A/S in another and down in the 1st match. After the break, Bellville’s players rallied together and put forward some tremendous golf to claw their way to the top, eventually securing 3 out of the 4 available points, with Shaun Fraser securing our solitary home point.
A fierce fight from our away side saw Tim Henshall and Dave Thompson secure 2 points, along with a half point from Gareth Wobbe, which brought our total to 3 .5 points for the day. It was a close encounter and one which we can definitely be proud of.
Our next fixtures are against Rondebosch in the Masters and Steenberg in the Mid-Am. Good Luck Gentleman, keep up the good work!
The Spring Monthly Mixed was generously sponsored by someone close to home; Colin Woodhouse, husband of our Ladies’ Captain, Bridget Woodhouse.
The format for the day was an Alliance, with various scores to count. The winners for the day were Lorna Fullford, Gill Brugmann, Colin Walker and John Abrey on a fantastic score of 83 points (pictured below left, with our sponsor, Colin). A fantastic birdie on a Par 3 with a double stroke, from Lorna, secured them 5 valuable Stableford points. In 2nd place were Greg Daly, Jacky White, Bridget Woodhouse and Erl Hvidsten (pictured below right). It was great spring weather and fun was had by all.
We look forward to our October Monthly Mixed. Thank you, Colin Woodhouse!
Sanlam Cancer Challenge
We had 6 representatives at the Regional Qualifiers for the Sanlam Cancer Challenge, held at Parow Golf Club. Our representatives in their respective divisions were, for the Men’s Section; Mark Retief (A-Div), Mark Warrington (B-Div) and Kevin Pieters (C-Div). In the Women’s Section were Joan Mauchline (A-Div), Helen Bowes (B-Div) and Bruni Bensch (C-Div).
The weather was amazing as our players took to the fairways to represent Clovelly Country Club. They all put in a great effort against some fierce competition. As with all competitions, there can only be one winner, and despite their best efforts not all of our representatives managed to qualify. However, Joan Mauchline carded a respectable 40 individual stableford points to claim top spot and will be flying up to Sun City to represent our club in the National Finals.
Well done Joan, we are so proud of you. Thanks to all the players who represented us! We look forward to having another chance at qualifying next year.
Heritage Day – 9 Hole Competition and Pitch ’n Putt
