Hello South-Easter! With the disappearance of the rain, has come the wind. Personally, although we don’t dispute that our ocean gusts test even the best golfer’s skills, we love the fresh coolness that comes with the wind. We are sure that anyone can attest to this beautiful coolness that greets you as you enter the Southern Peninsula, particularly on a hot summer’s day, and we just have to count our blessings!

One wonders how Althia, our Garden Manager, and Steven, our Course Manager, keep the plants so healthy when they are so often battered by the gales. It is a true reflection of their skills! Although Steven doesn’t seem to be able to get all of the trees to grow up, and not sideways. We think it adds to Clovelly’s character.

Ladies’ League Winners!

Our week started off with celebrations from all members and staff, as after months of battling it out, our Ladies Silver League played an outstanding final match and beat Atlantic Beach 5/1 to win the Western Province Ladies Silver League season!

Pictured below are our happy Silver League players, from left, Margaret Macdonald, Joan Mauchline, Karen Kent, Gill Briggs, Karen Denman and Katia Shaff.

We are so proud of them! Of course, the ladies got together to celebrate the League season is style. We would just like to thank every lady who took part in the various League divisions this year for dedicating so much of your personal time, and for flying the Clovelly flag so high! We think that you are the bee’s knees!

League Secretary, Birdie Jenkinson, (pictured below with Ladies’ Captain, Bridget Woodhouse) was honoured at the League celebrations, and no one could be more deserving of the praise. In a strange turn of events, Birdie fell and fractured her shoulder in three places whilst on the course a couple of days later.  We hope that you have a speedy recovery Birdie.

Just to put it out there, Birdie’s accident had a little something to do with a certain bunker on the 5th hole. All the more reason to avoid them!

Fond Memories of Graham Paulse

Unfortunately, in the middle of a fantastic week, we received some horrible news.

It is not often that a Club is blessed with a Member as endearing as Graham Paulse, and we were lucky enough to have him for almost thirty years!

We are very sad to say that after a courageous battle against cancer, Graham passed away last Thursday. He will be remembered for his mischievous, and sometimes inappropriate, jokes and comments (he was quite the hit with the ladies) as well as his kindness and friendship. We wish his daughter, Mandy, and son, Roger, peace and comfort during this time.

We have lost a true gentleman, and Clovelly will not be the same without him!

Member Booking Privileges over our High Season

As we approach the end of the year it is time to start gearing up for our high season! During this time we will have all of our amazing ‘swallow’ members back on our fairways, as well as numerous visiting golfers, who are desperate to get onto our course! We have waited all year for this action, and we love the bustle, but it can make everything a little more difficult.

We would like to remind all our members that during this period – January to March 2018 – Clovelly Members will have two days grace to book their games before the time sheets open to visitors. This means that only members will be allowed to book from the 15th to the 17th and 30th – 1st/2nd of each month, before any visitors can book their slots. We do allow a certain amount of advanced bookings, but these are carefully controlled with allocated member’s times reserved on each day. We try to ensure that our members have the Clovelly experience that they deserve, and we are hoping that this will alleviate some of the inability for members to get onto the course. Unfortunately, we just don’t have enough times for everyone, but hopefully, this will give you all ample opportunity to play.

If you have any queries please contact our Golf Director, Paul Stoner at golf@clovelly.co.za.
