This last week has been a relatively quiet one, as well as one which provided us with some more amazing rain! This certainly went a long way in giving the course a boost just before the 2017 Club Championships kicked off on April 1st.

Ladies’ Golf

On Tuesday the Ladies played an Individual Stableford Competition, won by Lavi Rend, pictured below with Ladies’ Captain, Bridget Woodhouse.

Sadly, Bridget’s mother had recently passed away, and our Ladies used prize giving as an opportunity to honour her and give their sympathies to Bridget, pictured below left with Marnie Wolmarans. We all wish our special Ladies’ Captain peace during this sad time.
Robin Brand, pictured right, the husband of our previous Ladies’ Captain, gave a very informative and well-needed talk on some aspects of the rules of golf, following several infringements during the Club Championships. His time and efforts were much appreciated!

Wednesday saw the return of the Monthly Betterball Stableford, sponsored by Nedbank Private Wealth. It was a beautiful day, and the players certainly capitalised on it, as we had over 100 players in the field. The winners for the day were Peter Motale and  Vince Reilly, on 50 points.

The highlight of the day was definitely a Hole in One, scored by Patrick Cox on the  8thHole. He was all smiles as he collected the entire two-club pot for the day. Well done!

Club Champs

Saturday, 1st April 2017 saw the start of the 2017 Clovelly Club Championships.

The ‘A’ Division led the field in the morning, with the ‘C’ Division close behind them. The weather could not have been better and the course was in spectacular condition. The ‘A’ Division players seemed to have luck, and talent, on their side; most notably Shaun Fraser who shot a 1 under par 71 off a 6 handicap. He was followed by Jon Bernard and Steven Dunn on 1 over par, and then Dave Thompson and Antonio Bruni on 2 over par.

In the ‘C’ Division Chris Rohde shot an 88 gross off a 17 handicap and was closely followed by Craig Whalley and our Captain, Fred Fautley, both with scores of 89 gross.

The ‘B’ Division played in the afternoon, which, with a pick up in wind, meant for more trying conditions. Paul Yule kept a level head and carded an awesome 78 gross off a 10 handicap to lead ‘B’ Division after day 1. Behind him were David Eisenstein on 80 and Mark Retief on 81.

On Day 2 of the Club Championships, the wind switched from the usual South Easter to a testing North Wester. This added to the challenge for all the players, testing their skills! Once again the morning provided the best conditions, however, the seeded players, who did best in their divisions the day before, all went off in the afternoon.
The ‘C’ Division players finished first, and after shooting 94 in his first round, our ex-captain, Yatish Garach, put together a tidy round of 87 gross off a 17 handicap to challenge the division leader, Chris Rohde, who shot 94 in his second round. This meant that, out of nowhere, Yatish stormed through the field to claim the title of ‘C’ Division Champion, with a final score of 181 gross! He is pictured below, right.
The ‘B’ Division’s competition was tight and, with the testing afternoon conditions, the final players struggled to keep their scores down. From within the top 10 players from the day before, Jimmy Smith replicated his 83 gross from Day 1 to record an overall score of 166, to win the title of ‘B’ Division Champ by 1 shot over Steven Fine and Mark Retief. He is pictured below, middle.

When the ‘A’ Division players arrived at the 18th Hole, a crowd of spectators awaited them. The general atmosphere was exciting and upbeat, with the crowd’s support going a long way to add to the cheer.

At the turn on the final day, Shaun Fraser was on 1 over par, closely followed Steven Dunn and Antonio Bruni, who shot a 1 under on the front 9 on 2 over par. Unfortunately, for Dunn and Bruni they both experienced trouble on the 10th and 11th respectively, which put them out of contention while Fraser seized the opportunity and recorded an amazing eagle on the 10th hole to extend his lead.

David Thompson finished level par for round 2, which meant his overall total stayed at 2 over par. Fraser, pictured above left and below, birdied the 17th to really ease the pressure up the 18th. He then holed out for a bogey to card a final round of 73 and a tournament score of level par, to be crowned Clovelly Club Champion 2017. Well done to Shaun, Jimmy and Yatish for their achievements and, most importantly, to all the competitors who showed great spirit and sportsmanship over the two days!

Senior Club Championships

Our Clovelly Seniors held their internal Club Championship Competition on Monday, 3rd April, sponsored by Fine and Country. The event was a great success, with a turnout of 47 players. They were fortunate to have weather which was kind, with little wind, and magnificent prizes generously sponsored by Tony and Lorraine Webb of Fine and Country.

The pin positions were particularly challenging as the Seniors kept the placements from the final day of the Clovelly Club Championships. There were only two 2 clubs in the entire field!

The Scratch event was won by Dave Martin, pictured below with Mike Tiffin and Tony Webb to the left, with a magnificent score of 25 points. Dave is, therefore, the overall Senior Champion for 2016/2017. Mike Muller was close behind Dave, scoring the same 25 scratch points, but unfortunately losing the count out on age. This happened to Mike last year too. He did, however, go away with prizes for both.

Equally impressive was Roy Emmett, who won the ‘B’ Division scratch competition with a score 20 points and the ‘B’ Division Competition with an amazing 45 points. Roy just made the competition, as his wife, Bubbles, was a little concerned as they returned to England the day after.

Runner-up in each division respectively was Dave Rennie and Peter Thompson.

Next year the Senior Club Championships will be held a little earlier, most probably in the first week of March. This will give the opportunity for more of our Swallows to compete before returning to their respective countries.

Easter Sunday Lunch

Hollow Tyning will be taking place on Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th April. The offices will be open from 8:00 – 14:00 but the course will be closed for maintenance.
