Clovelly has had a fantastic week, although very windy, and we are loving the visiting golfers from all over the world!
Unfortunately, the wind has chased away the rain that we have been hoping for, and with Day Zero fast approaching, water-saving is becoming more and more important! Although the drought is terrible and we can’t wait for it to be over, it has given us the opportunity to drain our dam on the 11th, with the objective being to dredge the dam and perform some maintenance on its lining and surrounds which have become ineffective and untidy over the years.
The fish, which have called this dam home for years, have been relocated to the dams on the 15th hole, all thanks to the effort of our Greens Team and Committee Member, Mr. Richard Goveia (pictured below). Richard reported that they had relocated around 200 fish from the 11th dam, comprised of 40 koi, and about 160 carp of varying sizes. Did you know that the bright, colourful koi that you see in our dams are all descendants of carp?
We are chuffed to announce Member, Larry Auret’s, hole-in-one on the 11th from Thursday, 18th January. We seem to be having a run of hole-in-ones at the moment and can’t wait to see who is next in line!
Well done, Larry!
Watch your Valuables
Just like the average round of golf, there is good and bad at Clovelly. Unfortunately, at this time of year, one of the negatives that rises sharply is theft.
We have many different faces pass through the Club each day and a popular method of crime that has been noticed at golf clubs in the Western Cape is to masquerade as a golfer and help yourself to whatever you can. We would like to remind all of our visitors and members to please guard your valuables, make use of the lockers, and do not take your valuables out onto the course. Our members, who are with us throughout the year and know that our staff are trustworthy, are particularly vulnerable because they do not expect anything to be knicked whilst they quickly pop into the bathroom or half-way house.
We do have cameras and security, but occasionally we are dealing with professional thieves and cannot guarantee the safety of your personal belongings. Luckily, these incidents do not happen often, and most of the time the valuables are found with an innocent explanation, but we would still like everyone to be aware. Please report any loss or suspicious activities to management and your locker room attendants.
Remember to pop in for our next Masterclass, taking place on Friday!
Get Lucky with Bell’s
We have some exciting news from our Bar Manager, Sebastian Brown!
Buy a double Bell’s Extra Special or Special Reserve and stand the chance of winning a Taylormade golf bag. There is a bag to be won every three months!
Our first winner will be announced on Clearwater Day in March. To enter; purchase a Bell’s, write your name and contact number on the back of your slip and give it to your bartender! Good luck!
Green’s Staff on the Course
While our members and guests enjoy our course in its pristine condition it was great to see the Green’s Staff enjoying it too, with a game of ‘Twilight’ golf
Clovelly has always encouraged staff to play on the course in order to build appreciation for the awesome product that they have created and to develop a sense of pride in their work. Pictured below from left to right are Brian Dlutu, Zwelethu Staffa Derek Metu whilst playing on Sunday evening. Hopefully, their golf’s as good as their greenskeeping!
Yes, we had two ‘firsts’!
