“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela
We would like to start our week off by wishing our readers a Happy Mandela Day! We hope that you have all been able to have a positive impact in someone’s life today, therefore making the world a better place!
We are still collecting blankets, on behalf of Barons Tokai. You can drop yours off at the Bookings Office and we will pass them on. Thank you for helping to make our beautiful South Africa a better, warmer and kinder place.
We are excited to announce that our 2017 Mid-Year Dinner, in honour of Chris and the late Carol Goldsbury, will be taking place on Wednesday, 23rd August. We would love for you to join us in celebrating Chris and Carol’s contributions to golf and Clovelly!
A menu will be sent out, with the poster, at a later date. We can tell you that we have secured one of South Africa’s top comedians, Nik Rabinowitz, for the event! Bookings can be made now through our Membership Secretary, June Featonby. Please email her on email@example.com or call 021 784 2111 to reserve your table.
In Memory of Chris Sandham
On a sad note, we are sorry to say that Chris Sandham, our temporary Starter and Marshall for our summer season, passed away last Tuesday, 11th July.
In the short time that Chris worked at Clovelly, he formed strong relationships with Members and Staff, and we are sorry that he will not be able to return this coming season. His good humour, kindness and character will be missed.
This week Mike Tiffin and the Clovelly Seniors, with the help of Course Manager, Steven Webber, and Garden Manager, Althia Pringle-Fraser, planted a beautiful tree in memory of Frankie Michael, pictured below left.
The tree is a Henkel’s Yellowwood. It is most attractive and is described as having a naturally thick covering of elegant drooping foliage. It is currently about 3 meters tall and can grow to 30 meters. From the photo below right, you will notice that the tree is planted on the left-hand side of the short 11th hole, which coincidently is where Frankie’s ashes were scattered. Frankie’s tree is in little danger of damage from golf balls as there are plans to redo the 11th tee, moving it further right and more in line with the hole.
All that Frankie’s tree awaits is a brass plaque which will be secured to a stone beneath the tree. Althia will also be planting a beautiful, new garden area around the base of the tree.
We hope that Frankie will be remembered and thought of fondly whenever our members pass the area. It is a wonderful gesture for a much-missed man, and thanks deserve to go to our generous Seniors, and of course, to the Course Staff for their help.
Scorecards & Handicap Records
As you all know, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday Competitions have become a staple at our Club over the years. Unfortunately, the quality of the completed scorecards handed in has been steadily deteriorating.
We would like to remind you that, as per the ‘Rules of Golf’, there are certain aspects of a scorecard that must be filled out in order for your result to be counted in the competition. These include the competitor’s handicaps, correct gross scores per hole and the signatures of both the player and the marker. It is also advisable that full names, dates and nett scores or Stableford points be recorded as well
If all scorecards that are handed in could be filled out in a neat and legible format, it would greatly assist the Clovelly team to process the scorecards as correctly and timeously as possible, which will ensure a punctual prize giving. Please, can we all strive to hand in complete and legible scorecards going forward? Your efforts will be much appreciated!
In conjunction with the above request, please note that going forward, all scorecards from Wednesday and Saturday competitions will be evaluated by the Handicap Committee. The scores recorded will also be checked against the score entered on the Handicap system for the relevant date.
Michell Golf has a few forthcoming events to invite you to! The first celebrates the 146thBritish Open, which tees off this Thursday! Our Local Pros, Mike and Alan Michell, would like to invite those that are interested in joining them for a fun 9 hole competition on Sunday afternoon. After your game, you will settle down to watch the final round of the British Open. Carl’s Catering will be able to provide you with some great food. If you are interested please contact Mike or Alan to make your booking.
Second, we have the monthly Pitch n’ Putt Competition run by Coach Dave. This is an awesome opportunity for our young golfers, but parents and friends, please come along! There is a braai going for boerewors rolls and refreshments will be available.
MichellGolf will be hosting another series of Ladies Classes. Feedback from previous ladies who have attended these classes is always great. This is a friendly, non-competitive environment where you get to learn the basics, as well as improve your game. It also happens to be a great bargain!
Congratulations to Nekisha!
We would like to congratulate our Advanced Bookings Coordinator, Nekisha Delcarme, on her engagement to Jeffrey Johnson. Nekisha has been at Clovelly for over eight years and is a very special part of the family! We wish her and Jeffrey all the best!
On that happy note, we would like to wish all of our readers a great week! Although cold, the Course is absolutely beautiful these days, so feel free to pop down to Clovelly and enjoy a peaceful round of golf.
